The Love of God

Romans 5:1-11

God has created us as a body-soul unity; while our body is mortal and weak, our soul persists eternally. Thus, we have a paramount duty to nurture our soul, which can be eternally saved or lost. In the sermon series, four key friends of our soul are identified: the Son of God, the Word of God, the Fear of God, and lastly, the Love of God – the focus of this message.

These spiritual companions are meant to dwell richly within us, shaping our hearts, lives, and souls as believers. Pastor Colin urges us to deeply understand and relish the love of God, emphasizing that it cannot be fully comprehended due to its infinite nature, yet is continually unfolded to us.

Discussing Romans chapter 5, verse 5, Pastor Colin explains that God’s love, vast and abundant, is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. This experience is integral to a Christian’s being, beyond mere intellectual knowledge.

The sermon underscores the importance of faith, highlighting that the love of God is poured into the hearts of those who actively choose to trust God over the world’s distractions. Moreover, those who persevere through suffering, acknowledging their need for Christ and embracing Him fully, are also recipients of His divine love.

3
00:00:16,660 –> 00:00:19,400
Let’s get to the message here is Pastor Collin.

4
00:00:19,400 –> 00:00:26,879
Today is the last message in our series on the soul.

5
00:00:26,879 –> 00:00:30,080
God has made us a body soul unity.

6
00:00:30,080 –> 00:00:32,200
The body wears out.

7
00:00:32,200 –> 00:00:35,480
It is weak in its nature.

8
00:00:35,480 –> 00:00:37,779
But your soul goes on forever.

9
00:00:37,779 –> 00:00:41,139
Your soul will never die.

10
00:00:41,139 –> 00:00:45,759
Your soul will be forever saved or your soul would be forever lost.

11
00:00:45,759 –> 00:00:51,619
That is why it is of supreme importance that you care for your soul.

12
00:00:51,700 –> 00:00:58,279
In this series, we’ve been seeing that God gives to us four wonderful friends for our

13
00:00:58,279 –> 00:00:59,459
soul.

14
00:00:59,459 –> 00:01:07,660
Friends who are to be welcomed into our life, into our heart, into our inner being.

15
00:01:07,660 –> 00:01:12,980
We have seen that these are first the Son of God, second the Word of God, third the

16
00:01:12,980 –> 00:01:19,660
Fear of God and today, this wonderful subject of the love of God.

17
00:01:19,680 –> 00:01:24,800
Each of these four is spoken of in the Bible as being in the heart, in the life, in the

18
00:01:24,800 –> 00:01:28,139
soul of a Christian believer.

19
00:01:28,139 –> 00:01:31,839
Galatians chapter 2 and verse 20, here is the Son of God in you.

20
00:01:31,839 –> 00:01:35,440
Christ lives in me.

21
00:01:35,440 –> 00:01:37,959
That’s true of a Christian believer.

22
00:01:37,959 –> 00:01:45,320
Colossians chapter 3 and verse 16, let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly.

23
00:01:45,320 –> 00:01:51,180
We looked last week at Jeremiah and chapter 32 and verse 40, where God says I will put

24
00:01:51,180 –> 00:01:57,019
the fear of me in their hearts that they may not turn away from me and this fear of God

25
00:01:57,019 –> 00:02:01,019
does us a wonderful, wonderful good.

26
00:02:01,019 –> 00:02:07,040
And today then we come to the last of these four friends as we wrap up this series and

27
00:02:07,040 –> 00:02:13,300
I do invite you to turn to Romans and chapter 5 and particularly verse 5, which is our focus

28
00:02:13,300 –> 00:02:18,520
so we will be touching on the other verses around it also.

29
00:02:18,520 –> 00:02:24,160
And here we have this was marvellous statement for us to relish and to take into our hearts

30
00:02:24,160 –> 00:02:25,679
today.

31
00:02:25,679 –> 00:02:33,779
Romans 5 and verse 5 God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy

32
00:02:33,779 –> 00:02:39,080
Spirit who has been given to us.

33
00:02:39,460 –> 00:02:48,320
And I want you to think with me for a moment about this love of God, the love of God, God’s

34
00:02:48,320 –> 00:02:50,580
love.

35
00:02:50,580 –> 00:03:01,080
The quality of any love relates directly to the capacity of the being who gives it.

36
00:03:01,080 –> 00:03:09,919
The quality of any love relates directly to the capacity of the being who gives it.

37
00:03:09,919 –> 00:03:16,160
So if you ask the question do insects experience love, I think the answer is reasonably yes.

38
00:03:16,160 –> 00:03:21,559
I mean you watch bees cooperating in a hive, there is clearly a relationship there, there’s

39
00:03:21,559 –> 00:03:26,119
partnership there, there’s common purpose that’s there developed even at the level

40
00:03:26,119 –> 00:03:28,779
of the insect kingdom.

41
00:03:28,779 –> 00:03:35,979
If you ask the question thinking about higher forms of animal life, do birds experience

42
00:03:35,979 –> 00:03:43,860
love, the answer very very clearly is yes, the relatedness of birds in migration.

43
00:03:43,860 –> 00:03:49,440
How many times have you stopped by Lake Arlington there, as these Canadian geese parade in their

44
00:03:49,440 –> 00:03:55,600
slow walk together as a group across the road holding all the traffic to a standstill.

45
00:03:55,679 –> 00:04:03,160
The capacity of birds is higher than the capacity of insects and you see the development of

46
00:04:03,160 –> 00:04:09,679
relatedness in the world of birds, move higher in the created order.

47
00:04:09,679 –> 00:04:16,480
And let’s get to cats and dogs, do cats have the capacity to love, all the cat lovers here,

48
00:04:16,480 –> 00:04:19,480
quite clearly the answer is that they do.

49
00:04:19,480 –> 00:04:20,839
What about dogs?

50
00:04:20,839 –> 00:04:28,459
Clearly the loyalty and the affection of a dog is a special gift in the lives of millions

51
00:04:28,459 –> 00:04:30,359
and millions of people.

52
00:04:30,359 –> 00:04:35,359
Now, whether cats are more loving than dogs is an issue that I’m not going to venture

53
00:04:35,359 –> 00:04:36,579
into today.

54
00:04:36,579 –> 00:04:41,179
That is the easiest way to lose half of the congregation and I’m not as foolish as

55
00:04:41,179 –> 00:04:42,640
to do a thing like that.

56
00:04:42,720 –> 00:04:50,579
All that I’m affirming is that the capacity of affection is given to cats and to dogs

57
00:04:50,579 –> 00:04:58,420
and that it is given to them in a higher degree than is given to birds or to insects.

58
00:04:58,420 –> 00:05:04,640
Then let’s move out of the animal kingdom and into the world of people, the man and

59
00:05:04,640 –> 00:05:06,839
the woman.

60
00:05:06,839 –> 00:05:09,239
People are more than developed animals.

61
00:05:09,440 –> 00:05:17,720
We are made in the image of God, and quite clearly the capacity to love given to human

62
00:05:17,720 –> 00:05:24,079
beings is greater by far than the capacity that is given to insects or to birds or to

63
00:05:24,079 –> 00:05:27,859
cats and to dogs.

64
00:05:27,859 –> 00:05:36,980
The quality of love relates directly to the capacity of the being who gives it.

65
00:05:37,760 –> 00:05:46,040
Now think with me about this, the love of God.

66
00:05:46,040 –> 00:05:50,579
Think about the capacity there.

67
00:05:50,579 –> 00:05:57,359
What are we to say about the love of God, this God who is eternal in His being,

68
00:05:57,839 –> 00:06:02,579
unlimited in His power, infinite in His knowledge.

69
00:06:03,899 –> 00:06:08,820
The capacity of God is more than anything we can fathom on earth,

70
00:06:08,820 –> 00:06:14,519
and it is more than anything that the angels can fathom in heaven.

71
00:06:14,519 –> 00:06:19,619
Therefore, the love of God is beyond our ability fully to grasp,

72
00:06:19,619 –> 00:06:26,559
which is why forever we will be lost in worship and wonder, and love, and praise,

73
00:06:26,660 –> 00:06:32,440
as the extent of His love goes on being unfolded to us for all eternity.

74
00:06:34,859 –> 00:06:42,459
The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell.

75
00:06:42,459 –> 00:06:48,959
It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell.

76
00:06:49,959 –> 00:06:52,119
And then as someone has written

77
00:06:52,119 –> 00:06:56,179
Could we with ink the ocean fill?

78
00:06:56,179 –> 00:06:58,420
Imagine that filling the ocean with ink.

79
00:06:58,420 –> 00:07:06,920
Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made?

80
00:07:06,920 –> 00:07:15,320
Were every stock on earth a quill and every man, a scribe by trade?

81
00:07:15,559 –> 00:07:25,380
To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry nor could the scroll

82
00:07:25,380 –> 00:07:33,799
contain the whole if stretched from sky to sky.

83
00:07:33,799 –> 00:07:39,679
No wonder the Apostle prays for Christian believers that we might have strength

84
00:07:39,679 –> 00:07:44,940
to comprehend the breads and length and depth and height of the love of Christ

85
00:07:44,940 –> 00:07:57,359
which he says surpasses knowledge. That’s our subject today the love of God and I

86
00:07:57,359 –> 00:08:02,679
want you to notice that the love of God is spoken here in two ways, first in

87
00:08:02,679 –> 00:08:08,239
verse 5 which is going to be our main focus but also in verse 8 that I’d like

88
00:08:08,279 –> 00:08:16,600
to draw your attention to now. Romans 5 and verse 8 says God shows his love for

89
00:08:16,600 –> 00:08:29,760
us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Now friends here’s

90
00:08:29,760 –> 00:08:34,179
something to tuck away in your memory and to keep with you all your life when

91
00:08:34,200 –> 00:08:39,479
you ask the question how can I know that God loves me? This is where you go for an

92
00:08:39,479 –> 00:08:46,820
answer. Romans chapter 5 and verse 8. Here’s how you know in any circumstance

93
00:08:46,820 –> 00:08:51,960
of life that God loves you. God shows his love that’s what the verse

94
00:08:51,960 –> 00:08:57,919
says. God demonstrates his love. The word could also be translated even as

95
00:08:58,140 –> 00:09:08,880
strongly as God proves his love in this. How do I know? Christ died for us. We are

96
00:09:08,880 –> 00:09:19,140
looking at objective historical data. Something happened and this is how I

97
00:09:19,140 –> 00:09:30,140
know that God loves me. How do I know? Christ died and he died for me and this

98
00:09:30,140 –> 00:09:37,419
is Romans chapter 5 and verse 8. The proof off God’s love, Christ did this and

99
00:09:37,419 –> 00:09:44,140
he did it for me. Now friends it is really important that

100
00:09:44,140 –> 00:09:48,020
you know how to answer the question, how do I know that God loves me, especially

101
00:09:48,260 –> 00:09:57,400
when you come to really traumatic events or seasons in your life. And here’s why

102
00:09:57,400 –> 00:10:03,020
it’s so important because when you face trauma, you may very well find that a

103
00:10:03,020 –> 00:10:08,960
large part of your whole emotional system shuts down, and because of the

104
00:10:08,960 –> 00:10:13,580
circumstances that you are in and what is hitting you in your life, you just

105
00:10:13,580 –> 00:10:20,159
don’t feel things as you normally would. And when you are in that place you will

106
00:10:20,159 –> 00:10:26,200
find yourself saying, well here I am in this trauma and I can’t feel the love of

107
00:10:26,200 –> 00:10:34,940
God. Of course you can’t. You can’t feel anything as you normally would. And that

108
00:10:34,940 –> 00:10:40,799
is why this objective historical revelation of the love of God is so

109
00:10:41,659 –> 00:10:47,979
important, especially at these times. You may find yourself in a place of saying,

110
00:10:47,979 –> 00:10:52,520
someone maybe there right now. Many Christians will be there at some point

111
00:10:52,520 –> 00:10:56,219
in your life. And this is why you need to talk this away and have it in your mind

112
00:10:56,219 –> 00:11:01,340
and in your heart. You may find yourself in a place of saying I can’t feel a

113
00:11:01,340 –> 00:11:14,099
thing. I come to church and I feel numb. But I know that God loves me. Because He

114
00:11:14,099 –> 00:11:19,340
sent his Son to die for me. That’s how I know even when I can’t feel a thing,

115
00:11:19,340 –> 00:11:26,799
Christ gave himself for me. And this is love. Even when what has hit me in life

116
00:11:26,880 –> 00:11:32,559
has numbed my system to the point where I cannot feel anything or relate to

117
00:11:32,559 –> 00:11:40,000
anything quite as I normally would. Now this is of huge importance.

118
00:11:40,000 –> 00:11:45,280
Romans chapter 5 in verse 8, this is where you go to answer the question how

119
00:11:45,280 –> 00:11:52,960
can I know that God loves me. But there’s more. And it’s the more that I

120
00:11:53,080 –> 00:11:57,799
particularly want to focus on in the scriptures today and let me put it to

121
00:11:57,799 –> 00:12:05,960
you this way. That the love of God is more than a truth to be believed, it is a

122
00:12:05,960 –> 00:12:12,239
gift to be enjoyed. And that is the great significance of where Romans chapter 5

123
00:12:12,239 –> 00:12:19,719
in verse 5 because verse 5 says that God’s love has been poured into our

124
00:12:19,799 –> 00:12:24,280
hearts. Now he’s talking about something that’s happening within us

125
00:12:24,280 –> 00:12:29,799
now, into our hearts, into our souls, into our interior life. And that this happens

126
00:12:29,799 –> 00:12:33,679
through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. So do you see how these two

127
00:12:33,679 –> 00:12:38,619
verses Romans chapter 5 in verse 8 and Romans chapter 5 in verse 5, two

128
00:12:38,619 –> 00:12:43,460
wonderful statements about the love of God, how beautifully they complement each

129
00:12:43,460 –> 00:12:51,320
other and how wonderfully they stand together? That the love of God is poured

130
00:12:51,320 –> 00:12:59,619
out at the cross by his Son and the love of God is poured into our hearts by

131
00:12:59,619 –> 00:13:06,799
his Spirit. It is a truth to be believed, Romans 5 8. It is an experience to be

132
00:13:07,000 –> 00:13:14,719
enjoyed, a gift to be enjoyed. Romans chapter 5 and verse 5. The love of God is

133
00:13:14,719 –> 00:13:22,099
rooted in history but it is also earthed in experience. It is universal in its

134
00:13:22,099 –> 00:13:27,739
scope, Christ giving himself on the cross here is the demonstration of the love of

135
00:13:27,739 –> 00:13:33,020
God that anyone in the world can see and yet it is to become personal in

136
00:13:33,599 –> 00:13:38,500
not only there and then on the cross, but here and now known and experienced

137
00:13:38,500 –> 00:13:46,700
in our hearts, Romans chapter 5 and verse 5. So I read Romans

138
00:13:46,700 –> 00:13:51,140
chapter 5 and verse 5, and this is my response, and I’m sure it’s yours. I find

139
00:13:51,140 –> 00:13:57,359
myself saying, I want to know as much of that love of God in this heart as I

140
00:13:57,359 –> 00:14:02,000
possibly can this side of heaven. Don’t you find yourself thinking that? Isn’t

141
00:14:02,099 –> 00:14:08,619
that what you feel? And that’s what we’re going to look at today. If all we knew of

142
00:14:08,619 –> 00:14:14,500
the love of God was what we may deduce from the fact that Christ died on the

143
00:14:14,500 –> 00:14:20,260
cross, it would still be glorious. But God speaks to us in Romans chapter 5 and

144
00:14:20,260 –> 00:14:26,900
verse 5 about something that is beyond perceiving that God loved us because

145
00:14:27,619 –> 00:14:33,700
He speaks about knowing it in our heart, experiencing it in our heart,

146
00:14:33,700 –> 00:14:40,219
moving beyond the realm of knowledge, increasing abundance of felt experience

147
00:14:40,219 –> 00:14:48,739
of what it is to be embraced in the Father’s love. So here’s what we’re

148
00:14:48,739 –> 00:14:53,659
seeking to do today at two points… it’s not always three, you know? Just two

149
00:14:54,219 –> 00:14:58,739
things today… First, I want us to look at what’s promised.Let’s look at this

150
00:14:58,739 –> 00:15:03,820
marvelous promise in verse 5… try and take it in. What is it that God is saying to

151
00:15:03,820 –> 00:15:07,799
us? And then the second thing, of course, is to answer the question, how can I know

152
00:15:07,799 –> 00:15:15,140
more? Much more than I have known before of this love of God poured out into my

153
00:15:15,140 –> 00:15:19,419
heart? These two things. But first, the promise, then, and let’s look at this

154
00:15:19,419 –> 00:15:31,380
verse, God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who

155
00:15:31,380 –> 00:15:40,179
has been given to us. Notice that beautiful word, poured. Not dribbled, not

156
00:15:40,179 –> 00:15:51,460
sprinkled, not dripped. Poured. It speaks of an abundance. Let me use a picture

157
00:15:51,460 –> 00:15:57,340
from the Scriptures to try and illustrate what is being described here.

158
00:15:57,340 –> 00:16:04,000
The Apostle John tells us that six days before the Passover, when Jesus suffered

159
00:16:04,000 –> 00:16:12,039
so much for us, He came to the home of Mary and Martha and Lazarus, three

160
00:16:12,039 –> 00:16:19,400
siblings who loved Him and who Jesus loved very much indeed. Lazarus, of course,

161
00:16:19,400 –> 00:16:25,280
was one who Jesus had raised from the dead. That’s in John chapter 11 and this

162
00:16:25,280 –> 00:16:32,200
story that I’m telling you is in John chapter 12. And, Jesus comes to the home

163
00:16:32,219 –> 00:16:40,320
and how do you say thank you to someone who’s given you life from the dead? Can

164
00:16:40,320 –> 00:16:46,719
you imagine? How do you say thank you? And here’s Martha and Mary and Lazarus and

165
00:16:46,719 –> 00:16:51,320
they want to put on a dinner in Jesus’ honour, and they put on the

166
00:16:51,320 –> 00:16:56,820
dinner and John tells us very movingly that during the dinner an idea came

167
00:16:56,820 –> 00:17:04,000
to Mary. She took a pound of expensive ointment and she poured it on the feet

168
00:17:04,000 –> 00:17:14,239
of Jesus, and John says this, the house was filled with the fragrance of the

169
00:17:14,239 –> 00:17:19,199
perfume. Now you think about that. She takes that here’s this flask of perfume

170
00:17:19,199 –> 00:17:23,640
and she smashes it. She puts the whole lot, not just a couple of drops that you

171
00:17:23,719 –> 00:17:29,579
would normally use, but by the whole lot of this very, very expensive perfume on

172
00:17:29,579 –> 00:17:38,780
the feet of Jesus and John says the whole house was filled with the

173
00:17:38,780 –> 00:17:45,000
fragrance. It went everywhere when it was poured out, not just everywhere in the

174
00:17:45,000 –> 00:17:49,900
room but everywhere in the whole house. There wasn’t a corner of the place where

175
00:17:49,900 –> 00:17:57,319
you could not smell the beautiful influence of what had been poured out in

176
00:17:57,319 –> 00:18:04,079
this marvelous act of devotion. Now, isn’t that a wonderful picture of what we’re

177
00:18:04,079 –> 00:18:13,160
thinking of here? The Holy Spirit pours out the love of God into the hearts of

178
00:18:13,160 –> 00:18:18,260
believers. What that means, therefore, is that it goes everywhere. This love can’t

179
00:18:18,260 –> 00:18:24,280
be contained in a small corner of your life. When it’s poured out by the Spirit,

180
00:18:24,280 –> 00:18:30,040
everything is affected. The fragrance fills the whole house. Think of this—it’s

181
00:18:30,040 –> 00:18:34,760
something wonderful just to lift your mind and open your mind to think of what

182
00:18:34,760 –> 00:18:40,719
this can mean for you—the love of God in all of its healing power poured out by

183
00:18:40,719 –> 00:18:47,560
the Holy Spirit permeating every part of your interior life. That would include

184
00:18:47,579 –> 00:18:53,959
your memories. That would include your mind, your heart, your will. The

185
00:18:53,959 –> 00:19:00,099
fragrance of the love of God, permeating into all of this, the pervasive

186
00:19:00,099 –> 00:19:06,680
presence of this love being poured out to you. It’s wonderful to

187
00:19:06,680 –> 00:19:12,000
think of. And, of course, as you think of it, the natural place for the mind to

188
00:19:12,180 –> 00:19:18,099
go is to say, well how in the world would that be possible? So I want you to look

189
00:19:18,099 –> 00:19:29,099
at what the apostle says, God’s love has been poured into our hearts. How? Through

190
00:19:29,099 –> 00:19:38,380
the Holy Spirit. You see what he’s saying? Only the Holy Spirit can do this. Your

191
00:19:38,420 –> 00:19:45,680
pastor can speak to you about the love of God but your pastor doesn’t have the

192
00:19:45,680 –> 00:19:52,699
ability to pour this love into your heart. You have to go to God for that.

193
00:19:52,699 –> 00:19:59,380
Your counselor can point you in the direction of a God who loves you but she

194
00:19:59,380 –> 00:20:06,400
cannot pour the love of God into your heart. You have to go to God for that.

195
00:20:06,459 –> 00:20:10,880
But look at what it says here in the scripture. It’s not just that the Holy

196
00:20:10,880 –> 00:20:19,300
Spirit can pour the love of God into our hearts. It says He has. You see, that God’s

197
00:20:19,300 –> 00:20:25,500
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been

198
00:20:25,500 –> 00:20:35,339
given to us. So trying to shape our minds by what the Bible actually says, Paul is

199
00:20:35,560 –> 00:20:40,280
writing to Christian believers in Rome and he’s saying effectively, now here are

200
00:20:40,280 –> 00:20:46,180
two things that you need to know about yourself as a Christian. Number One, for

201
00:20:46,180 –> 00:20:55,439
a person in Christ, the Holy Spirit has been given to you. He has been given to

202
00:20:55,439 –> 00:20:59,380
you. If that’s not true of you, you’re not yet in Christ and you shouldn’t

203
00:20:59,380 –> 00:21:03,660
pretend that you are. There’s no such thing as a person who’s in Christ who

204
00:21:04,660 –> 00:21:08,920
Holy Spirit. Check that out in Romans chapter 8 and verse 9, it’s very, very

205
00:21:08,920 –> 00:21:14,119
clear. How could Christ be in your heart and how could you be in Christ if it was

206
00:21:14,119 –> 00:21:18,959
not that the Holy Spirit had done that work and made it to be so? Could not

207
00:21:18,959 –> 00:21:23,680
possibly happen otherwise. So if you’re in Christ, Paul is saying to these

208
00:21:23,680 –> 00:21:29,979
Christians in Rome, understand two things are true of you. The first is this, that

209
00:21:30,199 –> 00:21:35,219
the Holy Spirit has been given to you. And here’s the second. Therefore, because

210
00:21:35,219 –> 00:21:38,439
the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God and therefore the Spirit of love,

211
00:21:38,439 –> 00:21:44,060
God’s love has been poured into your heart. These things are true of everyone

212
00:21:44,060 –> 00:21:49,280
who is in Christ. Everyone who is in Christ has tasted something of the love

213
00:21:49,280 –> 00:21:53,520
of God and a person who has not tasted something of the love of God is not yet

214
00:21:53,540 –> 00:22:02,680
in Jesus Christ. But friends there is so much more of this infinite love of God

215
00:22:02,680 –> 00:22:13,900
than any of us have yet tasted. The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen

216
00:22:14,880 –> 00:22:26,219
ever tell. You think about the vastness of this love of this infinite God being

217
00:22:26,219 –> 00:22:34,760
poured into the restricted capacity of a human heart. I mean we talk about trying

218
00:22:34,760 –> 00:22:41,060
to pour a quart into a pint pot. This is like trying to pour an ocean into a

219
00:22:41,119 –> 00:22:48,939
thimble, isn’t it? I mean, it’s just the love of God in a human heart. So the

220
00:22:48,939 –> 00:22:53,959
question that rises up therefore in the heart of any Christian believers surely

221
00:22:53,959 –> 00:23:03,699
is having tasted. How can I receive more. So here’s the second of these two things

222
00:23:03,699 –> 00:23:08,520
today the first was to gaze into what is promised and how wonderful it is and to

223
00:23:08,520 –> 00:23:12,680
get the taste of what a difference more and more of this would make in our lives.

224
00:23:12,680 –> 00:23:19,219
And then the second thing is to ask the question how can we enjoy more of what

225
00:23:19,219 –> 00:23:27,900
is here promised. I want you to notice what Paul says. God’s love has been

226
00:23:27,900 –> 00:23:40,400
poured into our hearts. The obvious question then is whose hearts. He does

227
00:23:40,400 –> 00:23:46,359
not say that God’s love has been poured into all hearts. That’s very important.

228
00:23:46,359 –> 00:23:51,300
This is not a universal experience that he’s talking about. He does not say God’s

229
00:23:51,300 –> 00:23:56,439
love has been poured out into all hearts. He says God’s love has been poured out

230
00:23:56,520 –> 00:24:05,300
into our hearts. So the question is who are the our? Who are the people into

231
00:24:05,300 –> 00:24:11,959
whose hearts the love of God is poured, because the more that we reflect the

232
00:24:11,959 –> 00:24:17,300
marks of these people, the more, therefore, we will experience what is

233
00:24:17,300 –> 00:24:26,040
promised to them. So who are the people who enjoy this outpouring of God’s love

234
00:24:26,040 –> 00:24:31,380
in their hearts? And there’s a very simple way and a

235
00:24:31,380 –> 00:24:36,979
very reliable way to answer that question. He’s speaking to a certain

236
00:24:36,979 –> 00:24:40,839
group of people so let’s look at what he says immediately before the promise and

237
00:24:40,839 –> 00:24:44,640
let’s look at what he says immediately after the promise and we’ll discover the

238
00:24:44,640 –> 00:24:49,780
people into whose hearts the love of God is poured and, if we can become more like

239
00:24:49,780 –> 00:24:54,780
them, we’re going to experience more of this love of God permeating every part

240
00:24:54,780 –> 00:25:01,339
of our being. So let me just point out these four markers very, just very

241
00:25:01,339 –> 00:25:07,560
simply. Who are the people into whose hearts the love of God is poured? Number

242
00:25:07,560 –> 00:25:14,079
one they are people who exercise faith. A love of God is poured into our hearts.

243
00:25:14,079 –> 00:25:16,959
Who’s he speaking of? Look at verse one.

244
00:25:17,119 –> 00:25:25,540
Therefore, since we same group of people have been justified by faith we have

245
00:25:25,540 –> 00:25:29,560
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Who’s the we? People who exercise

246
00:25:29,560 –> 00:25:39,160
faith. We have been justified by faith and God’s love is poured into our hearts.

247
00:25:39,160 –> 00:25:48,380
You see the connection? Now faith is more than saying you believe. Faith is believing

248
00:25:48,380 –> 00:25:55,819
God over all other voices and the Christian life is lived by faith and

249
00:25:55,819 –> 00:26:04,040
Christian experience is mediated by faith. No one can ever believe God’s

250
00:26:04,420 –> 00:26:13,439
truth and Satan’s lies at the same time. When God says to you in Christ you are

251
00:26:13,439 –> 00:26:19,599
justified Satan comes along sometime in the course of the week and he says how

252
00:26:19,599 –> 00:26:24,540
can that possibly be? Look at you you’re a massave contradictions, look at this

253
00:26:24,540 –> 00:26:28,560
area of your life it’s a complete and utter mess how can God possibly be at

254
00:26:28,560 –> 00:26:33,380
peace with you? Well then the question is who are you going to believe? Faith

255
00:26:33,380 –> 00:26:39,699
believes God over other voices. And friends don’t think of this simply about

256
00:26:39,699 –> 00:26:43,520
you know a decision 20 years ago I came to faith and so forth that’s wonderful

257
00:26:43,520 –> 00:26:46,660
and that’s important but the life of faith is a matter of

258
00:26:46,660 –> 00:26:52,199
believing God over other voices every day. You’re going to go out this week

259
00:26:52,199 –> 00:26:57,459
and there’s what the world says you are there’s what your own heart that

260
00:26:57,459 –> 00:27:02,660
sometimes condemns you may say you are there’s what the devil himself may

261
00:27:02,699 –> 00:27:07,540
suggest to you the great accuser may say you are and then there is what God says

262
00:27:07,540 –> 00:27:12,660
that you are. There’s what the world and its constant bombardment of advertising

263
00:27:12,660 –> 00:27:16,939
says you need and then there’s what God says you need. And every day we’re making

264
00:27:16,939 –> 00:27:23,420
active choices this is what exercising faith looks like to believe God over all

265
00:27:23,420 –> 00:27:33,979
the other voices that surround us, it’s faith. Faith believes God over all other

266
00:27:33,979 –> 00:27:41,260
voices and does it on a day to day basis and it’s these people people who are

267
00:27:41,260 –> 00:27:50,660
living by this exercised faith on a daily basis into whose heart the Holy

268
00:27:50,819 –> 00:27:58,660
Spirit is pouring the love of God. Number two, the people whose hearts into whose

269
00:27:58,660 –> 00:28:05,540
hearts the love of God is poured our people who persevere through suffering

270
00:28:05,540 –> 00:28:14,939
the Holy Spirit pours the love of God into our hearts whose hearts. Verse three

271
00:28:15,020 –> 00:28:23,420
we same group of people rejoice in our sufferings knowing that suffering

272
00:28:23,420 –> 00:28:31,020
produces endurance and endurance character and character produces hope so

273
00:28:31,020 –> 00:28:35,699
here particularly we’re being told if you connect verse 3 and verse 5 that

274
00:28:35,699 –> 00:28:40,859
we’ve been looking at that the love of God is wonderfully poured into the

275
00:28:40,859 –> 00:28:49,560
hearts of people who are marked by having persevered through suffering

276
00:28:49,560 –> 00:28:54,819
isn’t that very striking to you that the love of God poured out would be in

277
00:28:54,819 –> 00:28:58,900
the experience of people who suffer our instinct is well if God loves me I

278
00:28:58,900 –> 00:29:04,160
shouldn’t ever suffer but think of the one who knew the love of the Father

279
00:29:04,280 –> 00:29:14,239
without measure and think of how much he suffered and how much he was loved this

280
00:29:14,239 –> 00:29:19,040
is very important because the promises of God and we’re looking at a wonderful

281
00:29:19,040 –> 00:29:23,380
promise in Romans chapter 5 and verse 5 the promises of God are really hammered

282
00:29:23,380 –> 00:29:29,540
out as someone has said on the anvil of human experience and human experience is

283
00:29:29,540 –> 00:29:35,640
often painful. But notice that these people persevere through their

284
00:29:35,640 –> 00:29:39,239
sufferings we rejoice in our sufferings knowing that suffering produces

285
00:29:39,239 –> 00:29:44,380
endurance. Now friends obviously this does not mean that we should seek

286
00:29:44,380 –> 00:29:50,479
suffering, what it does mean is that we should use it and when it comes we

287
00:29:50,479 –> 00:29:56,660
should in the pain of it at least be encouraged by this that this is a place

288
00:29:56,900 –> 00:30:02,459
where we may hope to taste more of the love of God poured out even then at

289
00:30:02,459 –> 00:30:09,160
other times and to ask God that by his mercy it may be so. That’s the great

290
00:30:09,160 –> 00:30:17,619
encouragement in pressing on through the difficulties, the suffering, the pain, the

291
00:30:17,619 –> 00:30:24,140
sheer discouragement. Suffering produces endurance and character and hope and

292
00:30:24,219 –> 00:30:31,380
into our hearts the Holy Spirit pours out his marvelous and increasing

293
00:30:31,380 –> 00:30:37,719
knowledge of the love of God. Here’s number three. Into whose hearts is the

294
00:30:37,719 –> 00:30:43,000
love of God poured? Our hearts who are they our? Who are these people?

295
00:30:43,000 –> 00:30:48,520
They are people who own their need for Jesus. I’m looking at the verses just

296
00:30:48,520 –> 00:30:55,760
after verse five now, and notice how these people are described. While we were

297
00:30:55,760 –> 00:31:02,380
still weak, verse six, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Verse eight

298
00:31:02,380 –> 00:31:08,000
but God shows his love for us. Same group of people. In that while we were

299
00:31:08,000 –> 00:31:13,599
still sinners Christ died for us. And you see that the we and the us in verse

300
00:31:13,599 –> 00:31:17,300
six and verse eight are quite clearly the same group of people into whose

301
00:31:17,380 –> 00:31:24,380
hearts the love of God in verse five is poured. So here the Apostle is

302
00:31:24,380 –> 00:31:29,459
describing what we were by nature and he uses three words that are all very

303
00:31:29,459 –> 00:31:36,739
important. The first is weak. We were weak. Employers are in the business of

304
00:31:36,739 –> 00:31:41,939
hiring, they’re always looking for the people of greatest ability. It does a

305
00:31:41,939 –> 00:31:45,180
general rule that the people of the greatest ability end up being the ones

306
00:31:45,180 –> 00:31:50,219
that get chosen. But here God’s love is poured out to

307
00:31:50,219 –> 00:31:57,060
people who know that they do not have in themselves the ability to do what He has

308
00:31:57,060 –> 00:32:05,739
called them to do. That apart from Jesus Christ it is for me impossible. Then he

309
00:32:05,739 –> 00:32:13,739
describes our nature as ungodly. Christ died, verse 6, for the ungodly. Now a

310
00:32:13,939 –> 00:32:20,160
godly person is a person who is for God, and what the Apostle is saying here is

311
00:32:20,160 –> 00:32:27,079
look, that wasn’t us. We weren’t for God. We were for ourselves. We were ungodly.

312
00:32:27,079 –> 00:32:31,800
If we had an appearance of godliness at all, it was driven by our

313
00:32:31,800 –> 00:32:37,140
self-interest rather than by genuine love for Him. No, God was for us long

314
00:32:37,219 –> 00:32:44,839
before we were ever for Him. Our nature is ungodly. We’re about ourselves. Left to

315
00:32:44,839 –> 00:32:50,920
ourselves, that’s how we would always be. And we are sinners, verse 8.

316
00:32:50,920 –> 00:32:55,339
That means we are rebels, we fall short, we’re off the mark, we’re guilty and

317
00:32:55,339 –> 00:33:01,959
without excuse before God. So, you see what this is saying that the person

318
00:33:02,060 –> 00:33:07,800
into whose heart the love of God is poured

319
00:33:07,800 –> 00:33:14,719
is a person who knows if you were to take away from me Jesus Christ and all

320
00:33:14,719 –> 00:33:21,260
that is come to me through Him, then this is all that would be left by nature.

321
00:33:21,260 –> 00:33:26,800
I would remain forever a weak, ungodly sinner. And here’s the

322
00:33:27,479 –> 00:33:32,319
amazing thing that God saw us as we were, he had compassion on us, he sent his

323
00:33:32,319 –> 00:33:36,160
son for us, he demonstrates his love for us, in this, that while we were in this

324
00:33:36,160 –> 00:33:43,000
wretched condition Christ died for us. Now here’s the really important

325
00:33:43,000 –> 00:33:49,880
application at this point. The Holy Spirit will never pour the love of God

326
00:33:49,880 –> 00:33:58,060
into the heart of a self-righteous person, never. It never happens. People who

327
00:33:58,060 –> 00:34:04,000
think themselves godly and righteous and strong never get to savor his love as

328
00:34:04,000 –> 00:34:13,100
long as they continue to think that. People who feel that God owes them don’t

329
00:34:13,100 –> 00:34:22,600
taste this love. It’s never poured out into the hearts of the self-righteous. It

330
00:34:22,600 –> 00:34:29,959
is poured out into the hearts of those who own their need for Jesus Christ. And

331
00:34:29,959 –> 00:34:34,600
the more that you grow as a Christian the more you will own that, the more you

332
00:34:34,600 –> 00:34:38,239
will see that, the more you will see. If you took away Jesus Christ and

333
00:34:38,239 –> 00:34:42,500
everything that has come to me through him, what I would be left with is nothing.

334
00:34:42,600 –> 00:34:46,300
That’s why we sing that song, Hallelujah all I have is Christ. That’s what it

335
00:34:46,300 –> 00:34:53,000
means. I don’t want to present before God something that I think I’ve achieved in

336
00:34:53,000 –> 00:34:59,820
my life, because every good comes from and lies in him. And it’s my good only

337
00:34:59,820 –> 00:35:09,520
because by God’s grace he is mine. And then here’s the last. To whose hearts

338
00:35:09,520 –> 00:35:14,360
are the love of God poured. People are exercising and living

339
00:35:14,360 –> 00:35:18,459
by faith, believing the voice of God over every other voice on a daily basis

340
00:35:18,459 –> 00:35:24,100
are going to experience more and more of the love of God. People who just press

341
00:35:24,100 –> 00:35:32,360
on through suffering with endurance and find character being formed the love of

342
00:35:32,360 –> 00:35:36,520
God. Some folks are just like a rose that has been crushed and there’s a

343
00:35:36,600 –> 00:35:41,659
perfume that comes from their life. And that’s beautiful. It’s Romans 5, 5, being

344
00:35:41,659 –> 00:35:48,159
poured out into the life of a person who’s gone through Romans 5, 3. Amazing.

345
00:35:48,159 –> 00:35:52,659
The love of God is poured out into a person who really owns their need for

346
00:35:52,659 –> 00:35:57,399
Jesus Christ, and the love of God lastly is poured out into the life of a person

347
00:35:57,399 –> 00:36:02,639
who embraces Jesus Christ. Notice again, the we, same group of people. If while we

348
00:36:02,639 –> 00:36:06,879
were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, how much more

349
00:36:06,879 –> 00:36:12,439
now that we are reconciled shall we be saved by his life.’ What a marvellous

350
00:36:12,439 –> 00:36:19,340
statement about the Lord Jesus Christ. All that is ours through his death on

351
00:36:19,340 –> 00:36:26,479
the cross, all that is ours through his resurrection from the dead, and Paul

352
00:36:26,600 –> 00:36:32,679
brings the two together. We are reconciled to God through the death of his Son, it

353
00:36:32,679 –> 00:36:36,139
is through what he accomplished on the cross that we are forgiven, and the past

354
00:36:36,139 –> 00:36:40,699
is wiped clean, and we are brought into this new relationship with God, and

355
00:36:40,699 –> 00:36:44,840
all this flows from what Jesus accomplished on the cross but it doesn’t

356
00:36:44,840 –> 00:36:50,459
even end there. Now that we are reconciled Paul says, how much more shall

357
00:36:50,459 –> 00:36:54,719
we be saved by his life? You have got a risen Saviour who is at the right hand of

358
00:36:54,820 –> 00:36:59,959
the father even now and what that means is that, you know when your sins are

359
00:36:59,959 –> 00:37:04,139
forgiven you just begin to discover that now this is the start of a whole ongoing

360
00:37:04,139 –> 00:37:08,239
battle against stuff that you find within you that you’re battling every

361
00:37:08,239 –> 00:37:13,979
day and you have a risen Christ who is able to help you and one day he’s going

362
00:37:13,979 –> 00:37:19,459
to bring you into his presence and on that day, the battle that was begun when

363
00:37:19,719 –> 00:37:26,719
to Christ will be complete and there will not be a hint of sin in you and

364
00:37:26,719 –> 00:37:31,540
there will not be a trace of sin around you this is the kind of savior Jesus

365
00:37:31,540 –> 00:37:38,580
Christ is reconciled by the death of God’s son saved forever by the life of

366
00:37:38,580 –> 00:37:44,419
God’s son the Christ who died to save you lives to keep you and he will never

367
00:37:44,679 –> 00:37:54,139
never never let you go and it’s into our hearts that is the hearts of those who

368
00:37:54,139 –> 00:38:02,780
embrace this Christ the crucified Savior and the risen Lord into our hearts the

369
00:38:02,780 –> 00:38:11,219
Holy Spirit pours the love of God you want to know more of this marvelous love

370
00:38:11,239 –> 00:38:16,260
Exercise faith believing the voice of God over all other voices use your

371

suffering and persevere through it knowing that out of this you may taste

372
00:38:20,860 –> 00:38:24,320
