The Antichrist: Exalting Himself

2 Thessalonians 2: 1-7

Welcome to our show notes for Pastor Colin’s latest sermon that continues our journey through the letter of 2 Thessalonians. In today’s message, we delve deeper into the theme of perseverance, particularly focusing on how faith and love are the bedrock from which steadfastness springs. Pastor Colin emphasizes the import of entrusting our sufferings to God’s just hands and the anticipation of our glorious future united with Christ.

In this sermon, we learn the essential skill of discerning the nature of the spiritual battles we face, whether it involves personal struggles or external opposition. Pastor Colin enlightens us on the unseen spiritual forces at play and reminds us that our ultimate struggle is not against the flesh but against these forces of evil in the heavenly realms as depicted in Ephesians 6:12. This understanding equips us to persist in our Christian walk, and we are encouraged to both know and trust in the sovereignty of Christ over all powers.

1 00:00:00,000 –> 00:00:05,800 Well please open your Bible at 2nd Thessalonians. We’re continuing our series in this marvelous 2 00:00:05,800 –> 00:00:13,940 letter that’s all about how Christ enables his people to persevere. In chapter one we have found 3 00:00:13,940 –> 00:00:21,020 so far three strategies for staying the course. The first is simply exercise faith and practice 4 00:00:21,020 –> 00:00:27,360 love if you want to have perseverance this is what it grows from exercise faith practice love 5 00:00:27,360 –> 00:00:35,240 and you will have perseverance. Second strategy trust what you suffer into the hands of God. God 6 00:00:35,240 –> 00:00:43,480 is just and so you can trust into his hands what is not sorted out in your life in this world. Third 7 00:00:43,480 –> 00:00:52,400 strategy anticipate your glorious future in Jesus Christ and what is that future you will see 8 00:00:52,419 –> 00:00:59,259 Christ’s glory. You will be glorified in him and he will be glorified in us his people the great 9 00:00:59,299 –> 00:01:05,019 company of the redeemed who are only in heaven for one reason and that has nothing to do with us. It 10 00:01:05,019 –> 00:01:13,099 is the blood of Jesus Christ. Therefore our very presence there brings glory to him. Now the whole 11 00:01:13,099 –> 00:01:19,639 point of chapter 1 is this. When it’s tough to keep going when you’re weary of the battle when you’re 12 00:01:19,699 –> 00:01:26,059 fatigued in the struggle of living the Christian life of getting through what you’re facing. These 13 00:01:26,059 –> 00:01:33,580 are the things that we must build into our lives the strategies by which Christ enables us to 14 00:01:33,580 –> 00:01:41,800 persevere. Now today we come to chapter 2. The series is entitled staying the course when you’re 15 00:01:41,800 –> 00:01:47,879 tired of the battle. And chapter 1 as we’ve seen has been all about finding strength for staying the 16 00:01:47,879 –> 00:01:55,059 course. Chapter 2 is all about discerning or understanding the nature of the battle in which 17 00:01:55,059 –> 00:02:01,120 we find ourselves in this world. So think again about the battles that may wear you out. It may 18 00:02:01,120 –> 00:02:06,099 be a rebellious son a rebellious daughter a difficult colleague at work and just the 19 00:02:06,099 –> 00:02:11,440 the strain of dealing with that is wearing you down. Or perhaps you’re doing something 20 00:02:11,440 –> 00:02:16,360 for Christ you’re attempting to move ministry forward and you’re facing opposition at every 21 00:02:16,360 –> 00:02:23,080 turn. Or perhaps it is simply your own struggle with sin and temptation in your own inner life 22 00:02:23,080 –> 00:02:31,740 and you sometimes look at yourself and you say what in the world is going on inside of me. Well 23 00:02:31,740 –> 00:02:38,639 this chapter gives us wisdom for discerning the battle. What’s going on under the surface 24 00:02:38,639 –> 00:02:45,339 of the great struggle that you are engaged in in your life? This is the inside story if 25 00:02:45,339 –> 00:02:51,460 you like of what is going on behind the scenes and if you are going to stay the course then 26 00:02:51,460 –> 00:02:57,740 you need to be able to discern the battle. Now God speaks to us about this important 27 00:02:57,740 –> 00:03:04,160 subject in Scripture. In various places he lifts the veil so that we may have a look 28 00:03:04,160 –> 00:03:11,940 at the unseen forces that lie behind the events of our lives, and forces that operate in the 29 00:03:12,259 –> 00:03:18,220 spiritual realm. And perhaps the best known of these passages of scripture is Ephesians 30 00:03:18,220 –> 00:03:22,660 in chapter 6 that will be familiar I think to all of us perhaps more familiar than this 31 00:03:22,660 –> 00:03:28,399 passage, which is why I mention it might be. You remember that Paul says that our struggle, 32 00:03:28,399 –> 00:03:35,139 your struggle, my struggle, is not against flesh and blood. Our struggle is not essentially 33 00:03:35,139 –> 00:03:41,679 people, because behind the struggles that we may have with people. He says this. We’re 34 00:03:41,679 –> 00:03:48,160 struggling against spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places. That’s Ephesians 6 and 35 00:03:48,160 –> 00:03:54,399 verse 12. So he’s saying, understand this, people are not the problem. It may seem that 36 00:03:54,399 –> 00:04:01,520 way, but always remember this, that our struggle, your struggle and mine is not against flesh 37 00:04:02,100 –> 00:04:07,779 and blood, that’s not the primary issue. And so when you’re feeling worn out with this 38 00:04:07,779 –> 00:04:13,059 battle against the rebellious son or daughter or the difficult colleague or whatever, remember 39 00:04:13,059 –> 00:04:16,899 this, that behind him or her, there are spiritual forces at work. 40 00:04:16,899 –> 00:04:21,100 There’s more going on than his behavior, there’s something behind it. You need to understand 41 00:04:21,100 –> 00:04:26,480 what it is. When you’re struggling with the way that certain people do business in your 42 00:04:26,500 –> 00:04:32,359 industry, and it is really hard for you as a Christian, the real issue is not simply 43 00:04:32,359 –> 00:04:38,339 these people who you can think of and name right now. Behind them, there are spiritual 44 00:04:38,339 –> 00:04:43,640 forces that are at work in their lives, and more widely, you can’t see them, but you 45 00:04:43,640 –> 00:04:48,239 need to understand what’s going on. And it’s the same with your own struggle 46 00:04:48,239 –> 00:04:54,119 with sin. Sometimes you, you have this experience, you look into your own heart, you say, 47 00:04:54,119 –> 00:05:05,619 I hate myself. And you need to know what is going on underneath the surface so that 48 00:05:05,619 –> 00:05:14,399 you will know what it is that you should really hate. Wisdom for discerning the battle. 49 00:05:14,399 –> 00:05:19,279 That’s what chapter 2 of 2 Thessalonians is all about. This chapter, then, is about 50 00:05:19,679 –> 00:05:28,000 spiritual forces that are at work in the world, that will be uniquely expressed in the future 51 00:05:28,000 –> 00:05:33,440 in one man who will appear on the scene at the time of Christ’s second coming. 52 00:05:33,440 –> 00:05:40,359 It is more broadly about the battle that all of us face in life, how that battle will intensify 53 00:05:40,359 –> 00:05:48,140 as we come towards the ultimate confrontation when Jesus Christ, himself, will be revealed. 54 00:05:48,160 –> 00:05:49,459 So that’s the relevance of this chapter. 55 00:05:49,459 –> 00:05:51,700 God willing, we’ll be in it for three weekends. 56 00:05:51,700 –> 00:05:59,100 It’s of huge importance for you and for me to discern what’s really going on in the battle. 57 00:05:59,100 –> 00:06:01,940 I hope you have your Bible open in front of you. 58 00:06:01,940 –> 00:06:04,399 Let’s look at what it says. 59 00:06:04,399 –> 00:06:13,239 First, the chapter begins with a rumor concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our 60 00:06:13,239 –> 00:06:15,700 being gathered to him. 61 00:06:15,739 –> 00:06:23,640 We ask, you brothers, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report 62 00:06:23,640 –> 00:06:31,480 or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. 63 00:06:31,480 –> 00:06:39,500 Now, evidently, word had got around amongst these new believers that the day of the Lord, 64 00:06:39,500 –> 00:06:43,600 we’ll come to that in a moment, had already come. 65 00:06:43,600 –> 00:06:48,140 It’s not immediately obvious exactly what this would have meant. 66 00:06:48,140 –> 00:06:54,399 It may be that some people who had come to the church, even that early on, denied the 67 00:06:54,399 –> 00:06:59,959 doctrine of the second coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ, and suggested that what we were 68 00:06:59,959 –> 00:07:05,260 to look for was really fulfilled by Christ’s spiritual presence that was already there 69 00:07:05,260 –> 00:07:07,160 in the church. 70 00:07:07,160 –> 00:07:11,679 Throughout history, that suggestion has often been made. 71 00:07:12,640 –> 00:07:15,959 They deny the doctrine of the second coming of the Lord, Jesus. 72 00:07:15,959 –> 00:07:20,359 They see ministry purely in terms of this world. 73 00:07:20,359 –> 00:07:25,040 They have often gone in the direction of instead of seeing the hope of the world in Jesus Christ 74 00:07:25,040 –> 00:07:30,459 and His return, they have shifted and they have said basically the hope of the world 75 00:07:30,459 –> 00:07:36,000 is in us, in the church, in the community that we’re able to create, in the good works 76 00:07:36,000 –> 00:07:40,720 that we’re able to do around the world and so forth and so on. 77 00:07:40,720 –> 00:07:45,440 It may have been thinking like that, that was troubling this early church. 78 00:07:45,440 –> 00:07:50,859 It’s not clear exactly how these ideas got around among the believers, but it does seem 79 00:07:50,859 –> 00:07:55,660 that people may have picked this up in different ways, which, if you think about it, is usually 80 00:07:55,660 –> 00:07:57,239 the case. 81 00:07:57,239 –> 00:08:01,839 If you have the Bible open there, you’ll see a reference to some prophecy. 82 00:08:01,839 –> 00:08:06,779 That is someone got up and said in a meeting that they’d had a direct revelation from God. 83 00:08:07,299 –> 00:08:11,440 God’s told me this, they said as people sometimes said, and people believed it, they said, the 84 00:08:11,440 –> 00:08:14,000 day of the Lord’s already come. 85 00:08:14,000 –> 00:08:18,179 It seems that there was a forged letter, Paul says, a letter supposed to have come from 86 00:08:18,179 –> 00:08:25,380 us, a letter forged as if it had been from Paul saying that the day of the Lord had already 87 00:08:25,380 –> 00:08:26,480 come. 88 00:08:26,480 –> 00:08:28,959 Added to that, it may simply have been a report. 89 00:08:28,959 –> 00:08:34,780 He uses that word there, prophecy, forged letter or a report, which is what we would 90 00:08:34,859 –> 00:08:36,419 call today simply a rumor, right? 91 00:08:36,419 –> 00:08:40,780 That got around, and you know how this kind of thing happens. 92 00:08:40,780 –> 00:08:44,380 People are meeting over breakfast, and they’re engaged in conversation, and folks are running 93 00:08:44,380 –> 00:08:46,700 into each other in the grocery store. 94 00:08:46,700 –> 00:08:48,840 Did you hear there’s a letter from Paul? 95 00:08:48,840 –> 00:08:49,840 Oh, yeah, apparently. 96 00:08:49,840 –> 00:08:51,979 We were talking about that in our small group last night. 97 00:08:51,979 –> 00:08:53,140 Apparently, Paul’s written a letter. 98 00:08:53,140 –> 00:08:54,140 Oh, yes, you heard about that? 99 00:08:54,140 –> 00:08:56,539 I hear he says that the day of the Lord has really come. 100 00:08:56,539 –> 00:08:57,979 Oh really, yes. 101 00:08:57,979 –> 00:08:59,380 How do we know that? 102 00:08:59,619 –> 00:09:03,419 You know, I heard it from my friend and her boss. 103 00:09:03,419 –> 00:09:06,320 His brother had gone to Corinth, and he says he spoke to Paul. 104 00:09:06,320 –> 00:09:08,280 You know that kind of thing, you see? 105 00:09:08,280 –> 00:09:09,500 And suddenly, it’s all over the church. 106 00:09:09,500 –> 00:09:10,739 There’s a prophecy here. 107 00:09:10,739 –> 00:09:14,940 There’s a forged letter there, and there’s lots of rumors all over the place. 108 00:09:14,940 –> 00:09:20,200 And the word is getting around that the day of the Lord has already come. 109 00:09:20,200 –> 00:09:26,059 And this has, notice, alarmed and unsettled the believers. 110 00:09:26,340 –> 00:09:29,520 Now, that is hardly surprising. 111 00:09:29,520 –> 00:09:35,340 Because if it was the case that Paul had really said that the day of the Lord had come, 112 00:09:35,340 –> 00:09:41,479 that would be a flat-out contradiction of what he said in 1st Thessalonians. 113 00:09:41,479 –> 00:09:44,659 And many of you will know that passage in 1st Thessalonians, 114 00:09:44,659 –> 00:09:47,039 where he writes these words chapter four, 115 00:09:47,039 –> 00:09:50,960 Christ will come down from heaven with a loud command. 116 00:09:50,960 –> 00:09:53,840 He’ll come with the voice of the Archangel. 117 00:09:53,840 –> 00:09:57,219 He will come with the trumpet call of God. 118 00:09:57,219 –> 00:10:00,539 The dead in Christ will rise first. 119 00:10:00,539 –> 00:10:05,979 And after that, we who are still alive will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. 120 00:10:05,979 –> 00:10:09,419 Obviously, that has not happened yet. 121 00:10:09,419 –> 00:10:13,299 So, if Paul had said that the day of the Lord had already come, 122 00:10:13,299 –> 00:10:15,340 it would be a flat-out contradiction, 123 00:10:15,340 –> 00:10:18,460 he would have to have changed his mind, 124 00:10:18,460 –> 00:10:22,159 which would undermine apostolic authority. 125 00:10:22,159 –> 00:10:25,820 And since they had believed the gospel that Paul had preached, 126 00:10:25,820 –> 00:10:28,599 that would rupture the very heart and the foundation of their faith. 127 00:10:28,599 –> 00:10:31,739 If you can’t trust what the Apostles says, where else can you go? 128 00:10:33,460 –> 00:10:36,880 So, it is very important for Paul to write this letter 129 00:10:36,880 –> 00:10:40,200 and to put the record straight. 130 00:10:40,200 –> 00:10:41,880 You understand the problem?
