Jesus Stirs Up Conflict

Mark 2:13-3:6

Pastor Colin invites the congregation to open their Bibles to Mark chapter two to explore the emerging conflict that leads to the crucifixion of Jesus. He emphasises that this conflict, which surprises many by appearing early in the gospel, is clear and strong. From the beginning, Jesus experiences immense popularity with the crowd and intense antagonism from the Pharisees and scribes.

Pastor Colin notes that Mark chapter two contains four stories showing Jesus’ conflicts with religious leaders. Each story includes a question from the Pharisees and scribes about Jesus’ actions. For instance, in the healing of the paralytic, they question Jesus’ authority to forgive sins. They also criticise Him for eating with tax collectors, not fasting like John’s disciples, and allowing his disciples to pick corn on the Sabbath.

Questions, while often a quest for information, are used here to express resistance. The Pharisees’ questions aim to bring Jesus’ ministry under their control. This conflict grows throughout the second chapter of Mark, highlighting that Jesus intentionally stirs up this tension by challenging the religious norms of His time.

Pastor Colin explains that Jesus deliberately chooses these conflicts. Unlike humans who sometimes regret their words or actions, Jesus intentionally takes on these challenges. He confronts the powers that bind people, a mission that begins at the gospel’s start and continues to the crucifixion and resurrection.
