Jesus Has Authority to Forgive Sins, Part 1

Mark 1:40-2:12

Today, we’re diving into a fascinating story from Mark’s gospel. A paralysed man, carried by his friends, couldn’t reach Jesus because of the crowd. So they lowered him through the roof, and Jesus did something completely unexpected – he forgave the man’s sins. You might wonder, just like the paralysed man probably did, why Jesus spoke of forgiveness when physical healing was clearly needed. Pastor Colin explores this intriguing choice and why forgiveness is ultimately Jesus’ highest priority for us.

1

00:00:00,000 –> 00:00:08,040

He completely disregards the man’s most obvious needs says

2

00:00:08,040 –> 00:00:13,400

nothing about it and goes straight to what he wants to say to the man which is

3

00:00:13,400 –> 00:00:17,420

your sins are forgiven

4

00:00:17,600 –> 00:00:23,020

I suspect that the paralysed man was thinking why is he talking about forgiveness

5

00:00:23,040 –> 00:00:26,520

that is not why I came

6

00:00:26,559 –> 00:00:30,340

welcome to open the Bible with pastor Colin Smith I’m Davey Pick

7

00:00:30,340 –> 00:00:34,500

I am glad you could be with us today and Colin as people probably realize we’re talking

8

00:00:34,500 –> 00:00:38,360

about the story in Mark’s gospel where the paralysed man comes to a house

9

00:00:38,360 –> 00:00:43,119

carried by his friends they can’t reach Jesus there are too many people around

10

00:00:43,119 –> 00:00:48,900

him so they go to the roof of the house and lower him down and Jesus did

11

00:00:48,900 –> 00:00:53,099

something unexpected yeah I’d often think about the guy who owned the house

12

00:00:53,400 –> 00:00:59,939

What a marvelous story it is though and here’s this paralyzed man and Jesus says

13

00:00:59,939 –> 00:01:03,779

to him your sins are forgiven and you must have thought that’s not what I had

14

00:01:03,779 –> 00:01:06,959

in mind when I was lowered down is the right friend’s head in mind we were

15

00:01:06,959 –> 00:01:11,660

hearing about the paralysis not not the forgiveness it sounds like a supreme

16

00:01:11,660 –> 00:01:17,580

exercise in irrelevant doesn’t it except of course that he was healed and then

17

00:01:17,580 –> 00:01:22,959

would have lived for some time and then died and in heaven today I’m sure that

18

00:01:23,919 –> 00:01:28,360

I know for sure what was the most important thing that Jesus said to me

19

00:01:28,360 –> 00:01:33,360

then and that was forgiveness you know it really is a question how important do

20

00:01:33,360 –> 00:01:39,800

you think forgiveness from Jesus Christ is and if you don’t yet think that that

21

00:01:39,800 –> 00:01:45,300

is among the greatest things that he has done for you then you probably not yet

22

00:01:45,300 –> 00:01:50,080

understood the extent of your need of Jesus Christ I often say to to someone

23

00:01:50,080 –> 00:01:53,199

if I’m not sure if they really know the Lord what’s the greatest thing Jesus

24

00:01:53,199 –> 00:01:56,360

Christ has done for you and if a guy says well you know he answer to prayer

25

00:01:56,360 –> 00:02:00,000

and got me a job I said that’s great there’s something greater that Jesus

26

00:02:00,000 –> 00:02:03,760

Christ could do for you than you have yet experienced let me tell you about it

27

00:02:03,760 –> 00:02:08,000

well I think that’s where the story goes today… we see that in Mark chapter one

28

00:02:08,000 –> 00:02:13,080

starting at verse 40 so I hope you’ll be able to join us in your Bible as we

29

00:02:13,080 –> 00:02:17,039

begin the message Jesus has the authority to forgive sins

30

00:02:17,919 –> 00:02:22,320

what we’ve been learning so far is that Mark has been telling us

31

00:02:22,440 –> 00:02:27,199

that Jesus is the Messiah and that he is the Son of God that the gospel

32

00:02:27,199 –> 00:02:32,000

is all about Jesus and we saw that in him we find repentance and forgiveness

33

00:02:32,000 –> 00:02:37,199

and God’s wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit we saw as Jesus begins his

34

00:02:37,199 –> 00:02:43,320

ministry that when Jesus speaks things happen and particularly what happens is

35

00:02:43,639 –> 00:02:49,800

ordinary people follow him and troubled people are set free. Today we’re

36

00:02:49,800 –> 00:02:53,639

going to learn more about what happens when Jesus Christ steps into a person’s

37

00:02:53,639 –> 00:03:00,139

life what difference will it make to your life when Jesus Christ lays hold of

38

00:03:00,139 –> 00:03:04,839

you what difference will it make when you become a follower of Jesus.

39

00:03:04,839 –> 00:03:09,139

As we move through the gospel we’re going to find that painted out for us.

40

00:03:09,240 –> 00:03:15,020

Now we’re going to cover two stories from Mark’s gospel today first the

41

00:03:15,020 –> 00:03:19,440

story of the Leper that comes at the end of chapter 1 and then the story of the

42

00:03:19,440 –> 00:03:23,199

paralytic at the beginning of chapter 2 but we’re going to come to them in

43

00:03:23,199 –> 00:03:29,119

reverse order beginning with the story of the paralytic. Let’s just set the

44

00:03:29,119 –> 00:03:34,440

scene though taking up the story where we left off. Remember that Jesus had been

45

00:03:34,479 –> 00:03:40,740

surrounded by great crowds in Capernaum not surprisingly many many people who

46

00:03:40,740 –> 00:03:44,800

had heard about his healing power and were coming bringing their various needs

47

00:03:44,800 –> 00:03:48,639

with them and remember Jesus said we’ve got to go to some other villages so that

48

00:03:48,639 –> 00:03:55,740

I can preach there also for this is why I have come and so Jesus went with the

49

00:03:55,740 –> 00:04:01,440

first disciples on this itinerant ministry a first tour of the various

50

00:04:01,919 –> 00:04:08,399

in the area of Galilee and Mark records only one story from that itinerant

51

00:04:08,399 –> 00:04:12,800

ministry and that’s the story of the leper and as far as the rest is

52

00:04:12,800 –> 00:04:17,420

concerned he simply tells us in verse 39 that Jesus traveled throughout

53

00:04:17,420 –> 00:04:21,559

Galilee notice what he was doin,g preaching in their synagogues and

54

00:04:21,559 –> 00:04:27,359

driving out demons but at the end of this little tour Jesus comes back to

55

00:04:27,380 –> 00:04:31,640

where he began in Capernaum and of course as soon as he returns to

56

00:04:31,640 –> 00:04:37,260

Capernaum the crowds are back again chapter 2 in verse 1 a few days later

57

00:04:37,260 –> 00:04:43,000

when Jesus entered Capernaum the people heard that he had come home and so many

58

00:04:43,000 –> 00:04:49,700

gathered that there was no room left not even outside the door and I’m assuming

59

00:04:49,700 –> 00:04:55,320

that this is still Simon’s house where the remarkable miracle of healing his

60

00:04:55,500 –> 00:04:59,679

Mother-in-law had been performed and the great crowds had come before and now

61

00:04:59,679 –> 00:05:04,380

Jesus has returned to the house in Capernaum and they’re back outside and

62

00:05:04,380 –> 00:05:12,959

inside again notice what Jesus did verse 2 he preached the word to them that is

63

00:05:12,959 –> 00:05:18,359

Jesus priority. We will keep seeing this as we move throughout the gospel of Mark

64

00:05:18,359 –> 00:05:24,200

and while Jesus was preaching the word to them, Mark records a remarkable

65

00:05:24,519 –> 00:05:29,500

incident that took place right there in this house. He tells us about a man who

66

00:05:29,500 –> 00:05:35,519

was paralyzed. His legs would not bear the weight of his body and being unable

67

00:05:35,519 –> 00:05:42,820

to move he was confined to a mat on which he sat or slept and he simply lay

68

00:05:42,820 –> 00:05:48,980

there. But this man was clearly determined to get to Jesus and he does

69

00:05:48,980 –> 00:05:53,220

this in a remarkable way with a little help from his friends who carry him on

70

00:05:53,440 –> 00:05:58,420

his mat and bring him to Jesus when they arrive at the place where Jesus is

71

00:05:58,420 –> 00:06:03,079

staying they immediately find that the house is swarming with people not only

72

00:06:03,079 –> 00:06:08,079

crammed inside but the crowd spilling outside of the door as well. There’s no

73

00:06:08,079 –> 00:06:12,799

way that they can get a man on a mat through that kind of press of people and

74

00:06:12,799 –> 00:06:17,239

so these five men had a problem and it’s a problem we’re going to address this

75

00:06:17,279 –> 00:06:23,459

morning. How do you get to Jesus Christ they used their imagination rather

76

00:06:23,459 –> 00:06:27,619

wonderfully here they can’t get through the door and so they decide to come in

77

00:06:27,619 –> 00:06:31,399

through the roof and I don’t know about you but I wish I could have seen this

78

00:06:31,399 –> 00:06:36,220

incident these guys kind of hauling the mat and the man on it on to the roof and

79

00:06:36,220 –> 00:06:41,299

then digging a hole in the roof and then lowering the man on his mat in front of

80

00:06:41,420 –> 00:06:48,459

Lord Jesus Christ I’m assuming that this was Simon and Andrew’s house the house

81

00:06:48,459 –> 00:06:53,239

where it all began as it were earlier in chapter 1 so I wonder what Simon

82

00:06:53,239 –> 00:06:57,940

thought when he saw his own roof being opened up. Is this what it

83

00:06:57,940 –> 00:07:02,079

means to be a follower of Jesus by the way just a pause for a quick application

84

00:07:02,079 –> 00:07:08,700

there I guess the lesson for us is if we are serious about ministry we ought to

85

00:07:09,600 –> 00:07:14,820

building will need a few repairs now and again right? I think that’s what Simon

86

00:07:14,820 –> 00:07:20,339

Peter discovered on that great occasion now we’ll come back later to what we can

87

00:07:20,339 –> 00:07:24,959

learn from this paralyzed man and his wonderful friends but I want us to focus

88

00:07:24,959 –> 00:07:30,100

first on what is obviously the main point of the story. The friends lower the

89

00:07:30,100 –> 00:07:34,619

paralyzed man from the roof and he ends up lying on his mat looking as it were

90

00:07:34,859 –> 00:07:40,579

up into the face of Jesus and we read in verse 5 of chapter 2 that when Jesus saw

91

00:07:40,579 –> 00:07:51,540

their faith he said to the paralytic, son your sins are forgiven. Now the question

92

00:07:51,540 –> 00:08:02,540

here is how is that relevant? How is that relevant this is obviously not why the

93

00:08:02,540 –> 00:08:10,779

paralyzed man has come. This man on his mat has clearly come to Jesus because he

94

00:08:10,779 –> 00:08:17,440

is paralyzed that is why he has come but Jesus completely disregards the man’s

95

00:08:17,440 –> 00:08:26,140

most obvious problem and talks to him about something else. Son your sins are

96

00:08:26,140 –> 00:08:33,059

forgiven. Now to talk about forgiveness to a man with this obvious need on the

97

00:08:33,059 –> 00:08:37,919

basis of which he has come seems really to me to be disconnected. It seems off

98

00:08:37,919 –> 00:08:44,640

the point it seems at first sight irrelevant does it not? And I imagine

99

00:08:44,640 –> 00:08:49,580

that the paralyzed man lying there on his mat having made this great journey

100

00:08:49,580 –> 00:08:53,880

and I finally arriving in hearing this word from Jesus must have been quite

101

00:08:53,979 –> 00:08:59,539

bewildered you must have thought but Jesus that’s great but that’s not why I

102

00:08:59,539 –> 00:09:08,760

have come. More than that don’t you think at first sight that what Jesus says here

103

00:09:08,760 –> 00:09:17,739

might have seemed a little insensitive. It’s often said you can’t preach to a

104

00:09:17,739 –> 00:09:22,419

man who has an empty stomach. I’ve heard that you know if you’re going to

105

00:09:22,479 –> 00:09:28,900

effectively communicate to a man with an obvious need you have to meet his

106

00:09:28,900 –> 00:09:34,820

obvious need before you can think that in any meaningful way you can communicate

107

00:09:34,820 –> 00:09:40,280

about whatever you may want to say. I’ve been taught that at college and

108

00:09:40,280 –> 00:09:46,380

there’s some good in that point. But I want you to notice that Jesus does

109

00:09:46,380 –> 00:09:50,359

completely the opposite here doesn’t he. I mean he completely disregards the

110

00:09:50,559 –> 00:09:56,500

most obvious need, says nothing about it and goes straight to what he wants to

111

00:09:56,500 –> 00:10:04,900

say to the man, which is, your sins are forgiven. I suspect that the paralyzed

112

00:10:04,900 –> 00:10:12,659

man was thinking, why is he talking about forgiveness? That is not why I came. Now

113

00:10:12,659 –> 00:10:17,979

let’s just pause and try and apply what we’re learning here to ourselves. In

114

00:10:18,099 –> 00:10:27,640

this great congregation today, there is a vast array of need, some of it known, some

115

00:10:27,640 –> 00:10:35,119

of it hidden, but all of us have come and many of us are facing particular issues

116

00:10:35,119 –> 00:10:40,200

in our lives that really press in on us and they are things of great importance,

117

00:10:40,460 –> 00:10:48,719

sometimes very heavy burdens. Some of us are really struggling with loss. Some of us are

118

00:10:48,719 –> 00:10:54,979

battling depression. Some of us are struggling with fear or with anger or

119

00:10:54,979 –> 00:11:02,619

with worry or with lack of self-esteem or loss of confidence or loneliness. We

120

00:11:02,619 –> 00:11:09,140

have issues that relate to money. We have issues that relate to health. We have

121

00:11:09,179 –> 00:11:14,559

issues that relate to marriage and other relationships and these things press in

122

00:11:14,559 –> 00:11:23,140

upon us and they fill our minds and they are very, very real needs indeed. So much

123

00:11:23,140 –> 00:11:28,780

is that the case that I would honestly be surprised if there was 1 in 100

124

00:11:28,780 –> 00:11:33,619

people in the congregation today who actually came here thinking consciously

125

00:11:33,619 –> 00:11:38,979

my greatest need is forgiveness from Jesus Christ. Probably not one of a

126

00:11:39,020 –> 00:11:45,080

hundred in 100 has been consciously thinking that as we came to church today.

127

00:11:45,080 –> 00:11:51,599

Now it’s for this reason therefore that many people feel disconnected from the

128

00:11:51,599 –> 00:11:57,380

gospel because it really does not seem to address the issues with which we are

129

00:11:57,380 –> 00:12:02,940

most concerned. That is why there will always be pressure on the Church of

130

00:12:03,719 –> 00:12:11,099

to reposition the gospel to fit the needs that concern people today. So you

131

00:12:11,099 –> 00:12:15,260

shouldn’t be surprised, for example, if you find in our country and elsewhere in

132

00:12:15,260 –> 00:12:20,080

the world today versions of the gospel that are targeted to

133

00:12:20,080 –> 00:12:25,000

the concerns that people dominantly have. So you would expect to find versions of

134

00:12:25,000 –> 00:12:31,260

the gospel that are mainly about health, mainly about prosperity, or mainly about

135

00:12:31,380 –> 00:12:35,700

personal fulfillment. Why does that happen? Because there’s a pressure always

136

00:12:35,700 –> 00:12:41,119

on the church to reposition the gospel so that it more clearly addresses the

137

00:12:41,119 –> 00:12:45,859

issues with which we are primarily concerned in our life in this world

138

00:12:45,859 –> 00:12:51,780

today. If you find the preacher speaking about forgiveness to be strangely

139

00:12:51,780 –> 00:12:55,260

disconnected from your life, that probably means you’re in exactly the

140

00:12:55,260 –> 00:13:00,359

same position as the man lying on his mat in front of Jesus.

141

00:13:00,960 –> 00:13:05,539

Yes that’s good, but that’s not why I’m here.

142

00:13:06,539 –> 00:13:09,280

You’re listening to Open the Bible with Pastor Colin Smith

143

00:13:09,320 –> 00:13:14,359

and a message Jesus has the authority to forgive sins, and we’ve got to pause the

144

00:13:14,359 –> 00:13:17,520

message there for a moment but we’ll be back very shortly.

145

00:13:17,520 –> 00:13:23,119

The message is part of our series called the Gospel According to Jesus and if you

146

00:13:23,119 –> 00:13:26,739

miss one of the series if you or if you want to go back and listen again you can

147

00:13:26,799 –> 00:13:32,739

easily do that by coming online to our website openthebible.org.uk there you’ll

148

00:13:32,739 –> 00:13:36,580

find all the messages that have already gone out on air.

149

00:13:37,260 –> 00:13:38,159

Back to the message now

150

00:13:38,200 –> 00:13:43,760

we’re in Mark chapter 1, as we continue the message Jesus has the authority to

151

00:13:43,760 –> 00:13:46,299

forgive sins. Here’s Colin

152

00:13:46,880 –> 00:13:49,179

Now the title of our series is the Gospel

153

00:13:49,179 –> 00:13:54,260

According to Jesus, and clearly the Gospel According to Jesus is really the

154

00:13:54,280 –> 00:13:57,580

only gospel that matters, that’s why we keep coming back to the word of God

155

00:13:57,580 –> 00:14:02,320

because whatever is preached from this pulpit or any other pulpit around the

156

00:14:02,320 –> 00:14:07,219

world the only gospel that really matters is the gospel that is found here

157

00:14:07,219 –> 00:14:11,260

the gospel according to Jesus. And that’s why we’re coming back again and again to

158

00:14:11,260 –> 00:14:17,159

reshape our thinking and reorient our thinking to what really matters to Him.

159

00:14:17,760 –> 00:14:23,340

And quite clearly as we open the Bible today what we are seeing is that as far

160

00:14:23,380 –> 00:14:29,520

as Jesus is concerned forgiveness is a higher priority than any other need in

161

00:14:29,520 –> 00:14:35,960

this man’s life, that’s what matters to Jesus. And we may apply that by saying

162

00:14:35,960 –> 00:14:42,039

this that as far as Jesus is concerned forgiveness is a higher priority in your

163

00:14:42,039 –> 00:14:48,640

life than any other need that may be pressing in on your mind and occupying

164

00:14:48,739 –> 00:14:54,960

your attention as you have come to church today and so Jesus completely

165

00:14:54,960 –> 00:15:03,039

disregarding the man’s most obvious need says to him your sins are forgiven.

166

00:15:03,039 –> 00:15:08,539

The first question was how is that relevant? The second question is well now

167

00:15:08,539 –> 00:15:15,700

how is that possible? How is that possible? Your sins are forgiven.

168

00:15:15,760 –> 00:15:21,039

Now notice that the teachers of the law pick up on this right away in verse 6.

169

00:15:21,039 –> 00:15:25,200

Some teachers of the law were sitting there thinking to themselves why does

170

00:15:25,200 –> 00:15:33,760

this fellow talk like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone? Now these men

171

00:15:33,760 –> 00:15:38,659

were obviously good teachers of the law because they were absolutely right in

172

00:15:38,659 –> 00:15:44,979

what they say here. The principle is that the only person who can forgive is the

173

00:15:44,979 –> 00:15:51,880

person who has been offended. Let’s think about that a moment. If you set fire to

174

00:15:51,880 –> 00:16:00,219

my house it is possible that I might forgive you but if you set fire to my

175

00:16:00,219 –> 00:16:05,099

neighbor’s house, it is not possible for me to forgive you. The only person who

176

00:16:05,099 –> 00:16:09,599

can forgive you for that action is my neighbor. No use coming to me. I can’t do

177

00:16:09,599 –> 00:16:12,539

anything about it. I can forgive you if you set fire to my

178

00:16:12,820 –> 00:16:19,500

house but only my neighbor can forgive you if you set fire to his house. The

179

00:16:19,500 –> 00:16:23,320

principle is that the only person who can forgive is the person who has been

180

00:16:23,320 –> 00:16:29,539

offended. Now here’s the one thing that you need to know about this subject of

181

00:16:29,539 –> 00:16:36,159

sin. The teachers of the law have grasped clearly and rightly, that sin

182

00:16:36,159 –> 00:16:44,539

biblically defined is an offence against God. Sin biblically defined is an offence

183

00:16:44,539 –> 00:16:51,200

against God. Therefore by definition only God can forgive sins, which is what they

184

00:16:51,200 –> 00:16:54,719

say here. Now let’s pause there just for a moment,

185

00:16:54,719 –> 00:17:05,020

because you may nod some agreement at that definition. But are you aware that

186

00:17:05,339 –> 00:17:11,839

our culture today most people have not understood this and most people would

187

00:17:11,839 –> 00:17:19,420

not agree with this. Most people in our culture today and I’ll give you some

188

00:17:19,420 –> 00:17:25,199

statistics in just a moment. Most people in our culture today have redefined sin

189

00:17:25,199 –> 00:17:30,420

and their definition of sin is acting inconsistent with your own values or

190

00:17:30,420 –> 00:17:37,359

acting in a way that hurts another person. In the early 1990s, a survey was

191

00:17:37,359 –> 00:17:41,839

taken across this country, in which folks were asked about personal values,

192

00:17:41,839 –> 00:17:45,979

morality, and religion, and faith, and so forth, and so on. One of the questions

193

00:17:45,979 –> 00:17:50,599

that was probed was how people define sin? What do people understand by this

194

00:17:50,599 –> 00:17:58,439

word that is used so often in the Bible? Do you know that only 17%

195

00:17:58,680 –> 00:18:04,680

person defined sin as a violation

196

00:18:04,680 –> 00:18:10,760

against God’s will? What that means is that at least according

197

00:18:10,760 –> 00:18:14,660

to this survey that is published in the book, The Day America Told the Truth,

198

00:18:14,660 –> 00:18:23,119

that according to the survey, 83% of people in this country, 4 out of

199

00:18:23,380 –> 00:18:27,939

every 5 people you meet in this country do

200

00:18:27,939 –> 00:18:34,400

not know what sin is. What they think it is, is acting out of

201

00:18:34,400 –> 00:18:40,719

line with my values or acting in a way that hurts another person.

202

00:18:40,719 –> 00:18:45,500

But you see, if we redefine sin as acting out of line with my

203

00:18:45,500 –> 00:18:49,140

own values or acting in a way that hurts another person,

204

00:18:49,140 –> 00:18:53,099

as 4 out of 5 people in this country have effectively done,

205

00:18:53,199 –> 00:18:56,819

then all the focus of attention will be on me forgiving

206

00:18:56,819 –> 00:19:00,459

myself because I have acted out of line with my own values.

207

00:19:00,900 –> 00:19:03,579

I’ve done what I myself think I should not have done.

208

00:19:04,599 –> 00:19:08,939

Or it will be on a horizontal seeking of forgiveness

209

00:19:08,939 –> 00:19:12,979

and reconciliation and peace with another person.

210

00:19:14,500 –> 00:19:19,780

And if that’s what forgiveness is all about God is completely

211

00:19:19,819 –> 00:19:22,459

removed from the picture altogether.

212

00:19:23,819 –> 00:19:26,119

In fact I think it would be reasonable to say that probably

213

00:19:26,119 –> 00:19:29,380

for four out of five people in our country today God’s

214

00:19:29,380 –> 00:19:31,859

forgiveness is simply assumed.

215

00:19:33,520 –> 00:19:39,099

And the action is all to do with the self or it is to do with

216

00:19:39,099 –> 00:19:39,739

other people.

217

00:19:41,079 –> 00:19:45,619

Now the teachers of the law in the story knew far better they

218

00:19:45,619 –> 00:19:48,739

had been raised to understand the teaching of the Bible and

219

00:19:48,800 –> 00:19:51,500

they had grasped quite clearly what four out of five people in

220

00:19:51,540 –> 00:19:54,719

our country have not grasped, and that is that sin is an

221

00:19:54,719 –> 00:19:56,000

offence against God.

222

00:19:57,020 –> 00:20:01,579

Therefore, since it is defined by God and it is an offence

223

00:20:01,579 –> 00:20:05,199

against God, sin can only be forgiven by God.

224

00:20:06,459 –> 00:20:09,420

Other people may forgive your offences against them.

225

00:20:10,859 –> 00:20:11,839

That’s a wonderful thing.

226

00:20:13,099 –> 00:20:18,300

But your sin can only be forgiven by God because by

227

00:20:18,300 –> 00:20:22,459

definition it is an offence against God.

228

00:20:23,859 –> 00:20:27,579

So when Jesus says to this paralyzed man, your sins are

229

00:20:27,579 –> 00:20:30,500

forgiven, the teachers of the law pick up on this

230

00:20:30,500 –> 00:20:31,160

immediately.

231

00:20:31,780 –> 00:20:34,859

Who does this Jesus think he is they’re saying in effect.

232

00:20:35,839 –> 00:20:39,500

He’s talking as if he were God because they know fully that

233

00:20:39,579 –> 00:20:41,739

only God can forgive sins.

234

00:20:43,739 –> 00:20:46,560

And of course this is exactly what Mark is telling us right

235

00:20:46,560 –> 00:20:50,239

from the beginning of the gospel that Jesus is the Son

236

00:20:50,239 –> 00:20:51,119

of God.

237

00:20:51,819 –> 00:20:56,280

That he is everything that God is in the flesh.

238

00:20:58,160 –> 00:21:01,800

Now Jesus knew what they were thinking verse 8 and so he said

239

00:21:01,800 –> 00:21:03,880

to them why are you thinking these things, why are you

240

00:21:03,880 –> 00:21:06,800

thinking that it is inappropriate for me to pronounce

241

00:21:06,800 –> 00:21:08,199

forgiveness over this man.

242

00:21:08,979 –> 00:21:12,439

Which is easier to say to the paralytic your sins are

243

00:21:12,439 –> 00:21:16,459

forgiven, or to say to the man get up and

244

00:21:16,459 –> 00:21:18,459

take your mat and walk?

245

00:21:19,760 –> 00:21:23,579

Well to answer Jesus question is obviously easier to say your

246

00:21:23,579 –> 00:21:26,020

sins are forgiven because nobody is able to verify whether

247

00:21:26,020 –> 00:21:27,640

that has actually happened or not.

248

00:21:29,180 –> 00:21:34,239

But Jesus wants the man and the crowds to know that this

249

00:21:34,239 –> 00:21:38,260

man sins are really forgiven because he says so and so he

250

00:21:38,260 –> 00:21:41,699

gives this marvelous demonstration of his divine

251

00:21:41,699 –> 00:21:42,979

power and authority.

252

00:21:43,500 –> 00:21:47,619

Verse 10 that you may know that the son of man has authority on

253

00:21:47,619 –> 00:21:48,979

earth to forgive sins.

254

00:21:48,979 –> 00:21:52,979

Jesus says to the paralyzed man verse 11 I tell you get up take

255

00:21:52,979 –> 00:21:54,180

your mat, go home.

256

00:21:55,219 –> 00:21:59,099

And to the absolute astonishment of everyone in the house and no

257

00:21:59,099 –> 00:22:00,380

doubt outside as well.

258

00:22:00,959 –> 00:22:04,079

That is exactly what this man does.

259

00:22:04,979 –> 00:22:09,859

The people are saying In Astonishment we have never seen

260

00:22:09,859 –> 00:22:12,599

anything like this before.

261

00:22:13,479 –> 00:22:17,180

So here we have Jesus giving to this man to wonderful gifts the

262

00:22:17,180 –> 00:22:21,119

gift of forgiveness followed by the gift of healing.

263

00:22:22,380 –> 00:22:25,380

Summed up into wonderful powerful words that Jesus

264

00:22:25,380 –> 00:22:28,140

speaks to him son your sins are forgiven.

265

00:22:29,619 –> 00:22:35,380

I say to you get up take your mat and go those are wonderful

266

00:22:35,380 –> 00:22:39,500

words to hear when Jesus says your sins are forgiven.

267

00:22:39,500 –> 00:22:40,339

Your sins are forgiven.

268

00:22:40,339 –> 00:22:43,380

00:23:42,060 –> 00:23:45,839

month. If you’re able to set up a new direct debit in

291

00:23:45,839 –> 00:23:48,699

the amount of £5 per month or more, or

292

00:23:48,699 –> 00:23:51,400

give a one off gift of £50 or more,

293

00:23:51,420 –> 00:23:54,640

we’d love to say thank you by giving you a copy of

294

00:23:54,640 –> 00:23:58,719

Pastor Colin’s new booklet, What Jesus say to Skeptics.

295

00:23:59,119 –> 00:24:00,920

Colin, who is this booklet for?

296

00:24:01,579 –> 00:24:04,760

Well, people have always had very different reactions

297

00:24:04,760 –> 00:24:07,800

to Jesus. Some are committed followers, others are

298

00:24:07,800 –> 00:24:11,040

hardcore opponents, but there’ll be many people

299

00:24:11,040 –> 00:24:13,479

who are listening to the programme today who would

300

00:24:13,479 –> 00:24:15,339

identify with neither of these things. You’re not

301

00:24:15,339 –> 00:24:17,280

particularly committed to Jesus. You haven’t

302

00:24:17,280 –> 00:24:21,119

rejected him either. You do have questions. And this

303

00:24:21,119 –> 00:24:24,939

booklet is for you and for others listening. There

304

00:24:24,939 –> 00:24:27,099

will be a Skeptic in your life.

305

00:24:27,099 –> 00:24:30,640

They’ll be someone you know and love who has real

306

00:24:30,640 –> 00:24:31,760

questions. They’re not

307

00:24:31,939 –> 00:24:35,520

committed to Jesus, but this booklet really gives

308

00:24:35,520 –> 00:24:39,199

an opportunity to listen to what Jesus has to say

309

00:24:39,199 –> 00:24:40,260

to Skeptics.

310

00:24:40,260 –> 00:24:42,300

Well, we’d love to send you a copy of this

311

00:24:42,300 –> 00:24:44,680

booklet as our way of saying thank you for

312

00:24:44,680 –> 00:24:47,680

setting up a new regular monthly direct debit

313

00:24:47,680 –> 00:24:52,160

of £5 per month or more, or a one-off gift of £50

314

00:24:52,160 –> 00:24:55,540

or more this month. If you value Pastor Colin’s

315

00:24:55,540 –> 00:24:58,060

teaching on the radio and online, you’ll be

316

00:24:58,060 –> 00:25:00,719

helping to keep it here, and to support the work

317

00:25:00,979 –> 00:25:03,640

of Open The Bible. Full terms and conditions

318

00:25:03,640 –> 00:25:09,239

about this offer are on our website open-the-bible.org.uk

319

00:25:09,239 –> 00:25:11,560

For Pastor Colin Smith and Open The Bible,

320

00:25:11,560 –> 00:25:13,839
