Pastor Colin examines the second petition in The Lord’s Pray: “Your kingdom come”. Pastor Colin explains that it signifies recognising God as the great and glorious King. Unlike earthly kings, God’s rule extends over the entire earth. Although His kingdom is not of this world, it begins in us when we are born again through Jesus.

The sermon further explains that God’s kingdom grows like a mustard seed, starting small but eventually encompassing all. Believers are encouraged to pray for the spread of God’s kingdom and the advance of the gospel.

Pastor Colin concludes by discussing the coming of God’s kingdom, which will be fully realised when Jesus returns. He describes how this will bring the defeat of death, judgment of the world, and eternal peace and joy for those within His kingdom. The sermon ends with a prayer, asking for God’s kingdom to come and His reign to be evident in our lives.

1 00:00:00,000 –> 00:00:06,580 Well, please, open your Bible at Matthew chapter 6 in verse 10, we’re continuing our series 2 00:00:06,580 –> 00:00:10,280 Six Things to Ask of God. 3 00:00:10,280 –> 00:00:15,540 We’re looking together at the prayer that our Lord Jesus gave to us – the Lord’s 4 00:00:15,540 –> 00:00:21,360 prayer, which he gave in order to teach us how to pray. 5 00:00:21,360 –> 00:00:27,280 And we saw last time that the place to begin is with a relationship with God in which, 6 00:00:27,280 –> 00:00:34,400 through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, you come to know him as your own heavenly Father. 7 00:00:34,400 –> 00:00:39,959 Pray like this, Jesus says, our Father in Heaven. 8 00:00:39,959 –> 00:00:44,820 We saw that there are six petitions in the Lord’s Prayer. 9 00:00:44,820 –> 00:00:50,639 And these six requests that Jesus teaches us to pray, they’re really like pegs on 10 00:00:50,639 –> 00:00:54,540 which we can hang all of our prayers. 11 00:00:54,540 –> 00:00:56,759 In other words, this prayer is given to us as a template. 12 00:00:57,259 –> 00:01:00,700 It’s given to teach us how to pray. 13 00:01:00,700 –> 00:01:07,980 So, for example, if you are praying for a friend who needs some particular help or support, 14 00:01:07,980 –> 00:01:11,620 then what you’re asking for that person is really God’s provision. 15 00:01:11,620 –> 00:01:16,639 It’s part of what comes under give us today our daily bread. 16 00:01:16,639 –> 00:01:22,339 But when you pray in that way for God’s provision of help, whatever is needed for that person, 17 00:01:22,339 –> 00:01:24,900 you may also ask this question. 18 00:01:25,279 –> 00:01:30,760 Where will this person face the greatest temptations? 19 00:01:31,260 –> 00:01:36,239 And as you think about where this person in this situation is going to be most tempted, 20 00:01:36,239 –> 00:01:42,620 well, there you will pray for them to be delivered from that evil or you might ask this question. 21 00:01:42,620 –> 00:01:47,699 Now, as I think about this person and pray for them, where is it going to be hardest 22 00:01:47,699 –> 00:01:51,860 for this person to actually do the will of God? 23 00:01:52,180 –> 00:01:58,739 And there you’ll pray for where it will be hardest for them to do the will of God on Earth 24 00:01:58,739 –> 00:02:07,699 as it is in Heaven. So this is a very practical series Jesus gave us this prayer to teach us how 25 00:02:07,699 –> 00:02:13,619 to pray, what to ask. There are six areas in which we are to bring requests to God, and these six 26 00:02:13,619 –> 00:02:20,539 petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, they’re like pegs on which we can hang all of our prayers. 27 00:02:20,779 –> 00:02:27,179 So we have a very practical aim in the series. We want to learn to pray more effectively. Lord 28 00:02:27,179 –> 00:02:35,179 teach us how to pray. Now some of you may remember that a number of years ago, 29 00:02:35,179 –> 00:02:42,699 when we studied the Beatitudes, we found there that there is order and progress 30 00:02:42,699 –> 00:02:49,419 in the blessings that Jesus Christ calls us to pursue. And would it surprise you to 31 00:02:49,419 –> 00:02:55,899 know that there is indeed also order and progress in the six petitions of the 32 00:02:55,899 –> 00:03:01,100 Lord’s prayer. These are not six randomly chosen requests. There’s order 33 00:03:01,100 –> 00:03:07,020 in them. Each petition of the Lord’s prayer actually leads us to the next. 34 00:03:07,580 –> 00:03:14,059 So we began last week with, Hallowed be your name. Well, let’s ask the question, 35 00:03:14,059 –> 00:03:19,979 then, how is God’s name going to be honored? And the answer is, God’s name will be honored 36 00:03:19,979 –> 00:03:24,940 as his kingdom comes. That’s what we’ll look at today. But then if we ask, 37 00:03:24,940 –> 00:03:30,460 well, what will it look like when his kingdom comes, the answer is, well, it will be his 38 00:03:30,460 –> 00:03:37,979 will being done on earth as it is in heaven. And so each request you see leads to the next. 39 00:03:37,979 –> 00:03:42,860 And it’s for this reason, because we’re committed to honoring his name and the advance of his 40 00:03:42,860 –> 00:03:48,300 kingdom and doing his will, therefore, we ask that he will provide what we need, give us this day our 41 00:03:48,300 –> 00:03:55,179 daily bread and forgive our sins and deliver us from the many ways in which temptation and evil 42 00:03:55,740 –> 00:04:01,899 assails us. Now today then, we come to the second petition of the Lord’s prayer, 43 00:04:02,380 –> 00:04:12,539 your kingdom come. So Jesus speaks about a kingdom and that means that there is a great 44 00:04:12,539 –> 00:04:17,739 and a glorious king. So here’s the first thing that we’re learning today as we come 45 00:04:17,739 –> 00:04:24,859 to the second petition of the Lord’s prayer. God is a great and glorious king. 46 00:04:25,820 –> 00:04:35,980 Now today most kings and queens have a largely symbolic or ceremonial role, 47 00:04:37,100 –> 00:04:44,220 but in Biblical times all power and all authority lay in the hands of the king. 48 00:04:45,339 –> 00:04:53,260 The only question in Biblical times was, what are the boundaries of a particular king’s kingdom 49 00:04:54,220 –> 00:05:00,859 beyond his kingdom. Of course there would be other kings and they would reign in their kingdoms, 50 00:05:00,859 –> 00:05:10,380 but within his own kingdom a king reigned supreme, now the Bible confronts us with 51 00:05:10,380 –> 00:05:18,299 this wonderful truth that God is the great and glorious king, not only over a few people, 52 00:05:18,299 –> 00:05:25,260 but over the whole world. Sing praises to God we read in Psalm 47. 53 00:05:25,260 –> 00:05:33,660 Sing praises, sing praises to our King. Sing praises. Why? For God is the king over all the 54 00:05:33,660 –> 00:05:41,899 earth. There is no corner of the earth that is not under God’s sovereign control, 55 00:05:41,899 –> 00:05:49,739 no neighbouring kingdom over which he does not rule. Of course there are other powers, 56 00:05:50,700 –> 00:05:54,380 there are other authorities, there are other kings, there are other 57 00:05:54,380 –> 00:06:01,500 gods who do not recognize the Lord, but he is sovereign even over them. 58 00:06:01,500 –> 00:06:13,260 For the Lord is a grator God, we read in psalm 95, and a great king above all other gods. 59 00:06:13,260 –> 00:06:22,299 No one is outside of his rule or beyond his sway, and God is not only the great king, 60 00:06:23,500 –> 00:06:30,859 he is a glorious king. His people for that reason long for the day when they will see him 61 00:06:32,140 –> 00:06:39,500 lift up your heads, oh gates, and be lifted up, oh ancient doors, that the king of glory 62 00:06:39,500 –> 00:06:51,660 may come in. Who is this king of glory? Well, the Lord of hosts. He is the king of glory. So God 63 00:06:51,980 –> 00:06:59,579 is presented to us in Scripture as the great and the glorious king. 64 00:06:59,579 –> 00:07:05,660 And then we learn this, that God will establish a great and a glorious kingdom. 65 00:07:07,019 –> 00:07:16,299 God rules over all the earth, but clearly, this world in which we live does not recognize 66 00:07:16,299 –> 00:07:25,739 its king or his rule. And that, therefore, raises the question, where then will God’s kingdom be 67 00:07:25,739 –> 00:07:33,980 established? You remember that Pontius Pilate on one occasion asked Jesus, 68 00:07:33,980 –> 00:07:41,980 are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus gave a very clear answer to the question of where the 69 00:07:41,980 –> 00:07:53,660 kingdom will be established? Jesus answered, my kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were 70 00:07:53,660 –> 00:08:00,140 of this world, my servants would have been fighting but that I might not be delivered 71 00:08:00,140 –> 00:08:09,899 over to the Jews, but my kingdom is not from this world. Now notice Jesus repeats it twice, 72 00:08:09,899 –> 00:08:17,339 it’s very clear and very striking. Notice he doesn’t say my kingdom is not in this world, 73 00:08:17,339 –> 00:08:26,859 he doesn’t say that, he says my kingdom is not off this world and my kingdom is not from this world. 74 00:08:28,380 –> 00:08:35,020 So straight away we see this theme of the kingdom, it’s not easy to grasp. It’s in this world 75 00:08:35,179 –> 00:08:45,419 but it’s not from it and it’s not off it. So what then does it mean for us to pray as 76 00:08:45,419 –> 00:08:53,580 Jesus teaches us to pray your kingdom come? Well we’re going to look at three things together today, 77 00:08:53,580 –> 00:08:59,419 we’re going to look at the beginning of God’s kingdom, we’re going to look at the growth 78 00:08:59,419 –> 00:09:07,179 of God’s kingdom, and then we’re going to look at the coming of God’s kingdom. Let’s begin here 79 00:09:07,179 –> 00:09:16,619 then with the beginning of God’s kingdom. One night a very brilliant man came to Jesus. 80 00:09:17,500 –> 00:09:25,179 He was intrigued by what he saw in Jesus and he wanted to know more. His name was Nicodemus 81 00:09:26,059 –> 00:09:27,900 and Jesus said to him, 82 00:09:43,820 –> 00:09:51,179 Now think about it. This man was religious. He kept God’s law. He would have regarded his life 83 00:09:51,179 –> 00:09:55,979 as being under the rule of God. He knew the promise of God to establish the kingdom 84 00:09:55,979 –> 00:09:59,500 and he would have been very confident of his own place in it 85 00:10:01,500 –> 00:10:03,419 but Jesus says to this man, 86 00:10:03,500 –> 00:10:12,780 Unless you are born again you cannot see the kingdom of God. 87 00:10:15,900 –> 00:10:23,260 Any discussion of God’s kingdom surely must begin here you see what Jesus is saying to Nicodemus 88 00:10:24,219 –> 00:10:27,739 you can talk all you want about the kingdom 89 00:10:29,340 –> 00:10:33,580 but unless you are born again you won’t even see it 90 00:10:35,580 –> 00:10:45,580 born again we’re talking here about a fundamental restructuring of a person’s inner life 91 00:10:45,580 –> 00:10:53,979 see by nature we all seek our own kingdom we want to live under our own rule 92 00:10:55,419 –> 00:11:03,500 and jesus is saying unless there is a fundamental restructuring of your inner life 93 00:11:03,500 –> 00:11:08,780 your deepest affections and your deepest desires, unless that happens in you 94 00:11:09,659 –> 00:11:16,700 you will not see the kingdom of God 95 00:11:18,380 –> 00:11:27,900 now clearly restructuring a person’s inner life is something that only God could do 96 00:11:29,419 –> 00:11:34,059 only the creator can bring about a new creation 97 00:11:34,059 –> 00:11:41,979 and the Bible speaks about how God does that it speaks of how the father has delivered us 98 00:11:42,940 –> 00:11:50,940 from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved son 99 00:11:50,940 –> 00:11:58,940 in whom we have redemption the forgiveness of sins so what’s being said here is that God himself 100 00:11:59,500 –> 00:12:08,619 breaks the power of resistance to him that by nature is in us and he is the one who breaking 101 00:12:08,619 –> 00:12:17,419 that power brings us into transfers us into the kingdom of his dearly loved son Jesus Christ in 102 00:12:17,419 –> 00:12:24,059 whom we find redemption and forgiveness of sins now here’s the obvious question how 103 00:12:24,059 –> 00:12:30,859 then does that happen how can i be born again that was what Nicodemus asked when Jesus told 104 00:12:30,859 –> 00:12:38,380 him of course how is that possible how can I be transferred from the kingdom of darkness 105 00:12:38,380 –> 00:12:43,739 from the experience of the pool of my own heart away from the things of God and away from his 106 00:12:43,739 –> 00:12:49,659 ways how can I be transferred out of that and into the kingdom of his dearly loved son 107 00:12:50,140 –> 00:13:02,299 let the children Jesus said on one occasion come to me and don’t hinder them for to such 108 00:13:02,299 –> 00:13:12,219 belongs the kingdom of God. Truly I say to you whoever does not receive the kingdom of God 109 00:13:12,979 –> 00:13:29,799 truly I say to you whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter 110 00:13:37,299 –> 00:13:40,299 if you are to be in it if you’re to belong to it you must be born again. 111 00:13:40,479 –> 00:13:45,859 Must be delivered from the kingdom of darkness that is something that only God himself can do for you 112 00:13:45,919 –> 00:13:50,840 but it happens and he will do it as you come to Jesus 113 00:13:53,760 –> 00:13:55,760 J. I packer says 114 00:13:56,479 –> 00:13:59,539 God’s kingdom is not a place 115 00:14:00,640 –> 00:14:02,640 But rather a relationship 116 00:14:03,119 –> 00:14:04,880 not a place 117 00:14:04,880 –> 00:14:08,400 But a relationship and it exists 118 00:14:09,119 –> 00:14:14,179 Wherever men or women enthrone Jesus as the master of their lives 119 00:14:15,599 –> 00:14:18,000 So if you come to Jesus 120 00:14:19,359 –> 00:14:23,840 If you will enthrone Jesus as the master of your life 121 00:14:25,280 –> 00:14:31,520 You will belong to the kingdom and God’s kingdom will belong to you 122 00:14:33,280 –> 00:14:36,179 So the kingdom begins where it begins in 123 00:14:36,559 –> 00:14:37,940 Us 124 00:14:37,940 –> 00:14:41,080 And the book of revelations states this very very clearly 125 00:14:41,679 –> 00:14:45,299 Revelation chapter one and verse six to him who loves us 126 00:14:45,619 –> 00:14:51,460 And has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom 127 00:14:52,659 –> 00:14:54,580 He’s made us a kingdom 128 00:14:54,580 –> 00:15:00,580 That’s what god has done by the new birth and by transferring us out of darkness into his marvelous light 129 00:15:01,219 –> 00:15:03,880 To him therefore be glory and dominion 130 00:15:04,280 –> 00:15:06,280 forever and forever 131 00:15:07,640 –> 00:15:09,640 Amen 132 00:15:09,799 –> 00:15:13,479 So when we pray your kingdom come 133 00:15:15,080 –> 00:15:22,520 The first thing we’re really asking of god, is this that our lives this is where the kingdom begins that our lives 134 00:15:23,479 –> 00:15:24,979 Will be more 135 00:15:24,979 –> 00:15:26,039 clearly 136 00:15:26,039 –> 00:15:28,039 evidently fully submitted 137 00:15:28,840 –> 00:15:34,280 To his reign and to his rule. Lord cast the idols down 138 00:15:34,760 –> 00:15:36,760 in this heart 139 00:15:37,380 –> 00:15:39,380 Reign supreme in me 140 00:15:41,559 –> 00:15:43,799 That’s the first thing we’re asking of god 141 00:15:45,320 –> 00:15:47,239 When we pray 142 00:15:47,239 –> 00:15:49,159 your kingdom come 143 00:15:49,159 –> 00:15:50,919 That’s where it begins 144 00:15:50,919 –> 00:15:54,140 Begins in us in all who will come to Jesus 145 00:15:54,140 –> 00:15:56,140 Liberty 146 00:15:56,140 –> 00:15:59,679 Now let’s look secondly at the growth of god’s kingdom 147 00:16:00,299 –> 00:16:05,979 We know that god’s kingdom is not off this world. We saw that clearly in the statement of jesus 148 00:16:05,979 –> 00:16:09,979 But what does it look like in this world? 149 00:16:10,539 –> 00:16:11,340 well 150 00:16:11,340 –> 00:16:16,400 Jesus spoke about what it looks like in this world very clearly and repeatedly 151 00:16:17,260 –> 00:16:18,940 in the parables 152 00:16:18,940 –> 00:16:21,979 Let me give you one example from mark and chapter four 153 00:16:22,780 –> 00:16:24,619 Jesus says 154 00:16:24,619 –> 00:16:29,099 With what can we compare the kingdom of god or what? 155 00:16:29,640 –> 00:16:32,460 Parable shall we use for it? 156 00:16:33,500 –> 00:16:35,500 And here’s the analogy he chooses 157 00:16:36,700 –> 00:16:39,820 It is like a grain of mustard seed 158 00:16:40,780 –> 00:16:46,059 Which when sewn on the ground is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth 159 00:16:47,179 –> 00:16:48,619 yet 160 00:16:48,619 –> 00:16:54,539 When it is sewn it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out 161 00:16:55,099 –> 00:17:00,940 Large branches so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade 162 00:17:02,380 –> 00:17:05,900 Now you see what jesus is saying? What is the kingdom of god like? 163 00:17:05,979 –> 00:17:11,579 What does it look like in this world?
