Defiant, Part 2

Hebrews 6:4-8

Today’s episode called “Defiant”, tackles Hebrews chapter 6, exploring the sobering reality of spiritual experiences that may fall short of true faith in Jesus Christ. Pastor Colin reflects on the tendency for some individuals, even those raised in Christian environments, to drift away or become defiant toward Christ. This message underscores the importance of returning to the heart of faith and embracing Jesus’ love and redemption. Whether you’re revisiting familiar teachings or discovering them anew, this episode offers an inspiring invitation to evaluate your faith journey.

100:00:00,920 –> 00:00:09,120it would be easy when you go through this list to simply assume that someone200:00:09,120 –> 00:00:13,200who has, let’s put them together, been enlightened,300:00:13,200 –> 00:00:17,559tasted the heavenly gift shared in the Holy Spirit,400:00:17,559 –> 00:00:21,740tasted in the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the age to come,500:00:21,740 –> 00:00:27,680that such a person must belong to Jesus Christ. Hebrews chapter six is quite600:00:27,680 –> 00:00:32,419clearly telling us that that would be a false assumption.700:00:32,419 –> 00:00:36,240Welcome to Open the Bible with Pastor Colin Smith I’m David Pick, glad you800:00:36,240 –> 00:00:40,060could join us today and Colin sounds like today’s message is going to be900:00:40,060 –> 00:00:44,480sobering, it’s based on a talk you gave to some college students at Taylor1000:00:44,480 –> 00:00:48,139University in the U.S., part of their spiritual renewal week?1100:00:48,139 –> 00:00:49,500Yes right and1200:00:49,500 –> 00:00:54,320it’s not only sobering but it’s also highly relevant. I think every Christian1300:00:54,419 –> 00:00:59,799family know someone who has walked away from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ they1400:00:59,799 –> 00:01:03,419were brought up with it they may at one time have professed faith in the Lord1500:01:03,419 –> 00:01:07,720Jesus Christ but now they have no interest whatsoever and what is the1600:01:07,720 –> 00:01:11,879position of that person? People wonder about this well you know if they made a1700:01:11,879 –> 00:01:15,599decision once does that mean that everything’s fine with them forever?1800:01:15,599 –> 00:01:21,220Well Hebrew 6 speaks to this very very directly speaks towards the person who1900:01:21,220 –> 00:01:27,699becomes defiant towards the Lord saying you are crucifying afresh the Son of God2000:01:27,699 –> 00:01:33,680to your own harm so you chose the right words it is sobering but it speaks to2100:01:33,680 –> 00:01:37,879every Christian family we all know someone in this position and I’m so2200:01:37,879 –> 00:01:44,239grateful for the opportunity to put out today in the program the teaching of the2300:01:44,239 –> 00:01:49,900Word of God that calls a person who’s become defiant to come back to faith in2400:01:50,080 –> 00:01:55,599Jesus Christ and the way is always open and that is always possible and if you2500:01:55,599 –> 00:02:00,320have turned away from Christ I’m so glad you’re listening to the program today my2600:02:00,320 –> 00:02:05,059prayer is that you will return to the Lord and Savior who loves you so join us2700:02:05,059 –> 00:02:11,100today if you can in Hebrews chapter 6 as we continue the message defiant. Here is2800:02:11,100 –> 00:02:19,000Colin. Now Hebrews here lists five kinds of spiritual experience that a person2900:02:19,000 –> 00:02:26,580can have without being saved. They have been enlightened that’s number one in3000:02:26,580 –> 00:02:33,360other words it is possible to have the light of truth. To be brought up in a3100:02:33,360 –> 00:02:37,580faithful biblical church to come to a faithful biblical place like Taylor3200:02:37,580 –> 00:02:45,960University and to know the truth and for you to understand it and even as in the3300:02:46,460 –> 00:02:53,860of Judas to teach it because he did that and yet not to be saved. Notice secondly3400:02:53,860 –> 00:02:58,979they have tasted the heavenly gift. What’s the heavenly gift? The heavenly3500:02:58,979 –> 00:03:03,919gift clearly is Jesus himself. God so loved the world that he gave his one and3600:03:03,919 –> 00:03:09,520only son. Jesus is the heavenly gift and what we’re being told here is that it is3700:03:10,419 –> 00:03:15,520possible for someone who is not one of Christ’s sheep to have at least some3800:03:15,520 –> 00:03:23,399taste of the love of God. Remember that tasting is not the same as eating. Now in3900:03:23,399 –> 00:03:30,240the same way it is possible to taste the heavenly gift to have some knowledge of4000:03:30,240 –> 00:03:37,919Jesus and yet not to have any appetite for more. Third they have shared in the4100:03:38,000 –> 00:03:43,979Holy Spirit. Now when I have the opportunity as a pastor of speaking to4200:03:43,979 –> 00:03:50,720someone who has turned away from faith a question that I sometimes ask is this4300:03:50,720 –> 00:03:59,160what was the nearest you ever came to being a Christian? And I often get an4400:03:59,160 –> 00:04:03,440answer like this well, you know, I remember one night at camp and I did4500:04:03,460 –> 00:04:07,199feel that God was speaking to me then, but I and I wanted to respond but I4600:04:07,199 –> 00:04:11,839didn’t. And when I hear a story like this there’s absolutely no question in4700:04:11,839 –> 00:04:18,320my mind that the Holy Spirit touched this person’s life. What happened was4800:04:18,320 –> 00:04:23,760that this person had a spiritual experience but it was not a saving4900:04:23,760 –> 00:04:30,820experience and it is possible to see and experience the Spirit of God at work5000:04:30,899 –> 00:04:40,239without being truly saved. And then number four – they have tasted the goodness of5100:04:40,239 –> 00:04:44,980the Word of God. Notice again the word tasted and remember that tasting is not5200:04:44,980 –> 00:04:50,880the same as eating. It is possible to be well taught in the Word of God over many5300:04:50,880 –> 00:04:56,980many years to have that as a spiritual experience but for it not to be a saving5400:04:57,079 –> 00:05:02,779experience and still not to be one of Christ’s sheep. And then fifthly and5500:05:02,779 –> 00:05:09,480finally they have tasted the powers of the age to come. In other words it is5600:05:09,480 –> 00:05:16,279possible for a person to experience real answers to prayer, even to experience a5700:05:16,279 –> 00:05:20,119miracle, to be used in a remarkable way by God,5800:05:20,119 –> 00:05:23,980even to bring someone else to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and still not to5900:05:24,019 –> 00:05:30,440be saved yourself. Now it would be easy when you go through this list to simply6000:05:30,440 –> 00:05:37,059assume that someone who has—let’s put them together—been enlightened, tasted6100:05:37,059 –> 00:05:42,119the heavenly gift, shared in the Holy Spirit, tasted in the goodness of the6200:05:42,119 –> 00:05:46,839Word of God and the powers of the age to come, that such a person must belong to6300:05:46,839 –> 00:05:51,899Jesus Christ. And Hebrews chapter 6 is quite clearly telling us that that would6400:05:51,940 –> 00:05:59,959be a false assumption. Now at this point, you might very reasonably be asking and6500:05:59,959 –> 00:06:07,959wondering, well are there any examples, real examples, in the Bible of people who6600:06:07,959 –> 00:06:15,179experienced these five things and were not Christ’s sheep? And the answer to6700:06:15,179 –> 00:06:20,920that is, YES. Plenty of examples. I don’t want to keep you here all night on this6800:06:21,880 –> 00:06:27,799just give you three. The first would be the people of Bethsaida. Listen to what6900:06:27,799 –> 00:06:34,339Jesus says in regards to them. Then Matthew says, Matthew 11 20, ‘… he began to7000:06:34,339 –> 00:06:43,459denounce the cities where most of His mighty works had been done, because they7100:06:43,459 –> 00:06:48,420did not repent.’ Now notice that we’ve been told quite clearly here in the7200:06:48,540 –> 00:06:54,820gospels that Bethsaida was the place, one of the places, where most, most of Jesus’7300:06:54,820 –> 00:07:02,040miracles were done. The light of Christ came to this town.7400:07:02,040 –> 00:07:08,399The people of Bethsaida, they tasted the miraculous powers of the age to come.7500:07:08,399 –> 00:07:14,459They heard the Word of God from the lips of Jesus himself. You can’t get better7600:07:14,500 –> 00:07:20,700than that. They saw the Holy Spirit working in power.7700:07:20,700 –> 00:07:26,619The people of Bethsaida enjoyed remarkable spiritual experiences, but in the end they7800:07:26,619 –> 00:07:34,619rejected Jesus and they did not repent. In contrast, the people of Tyre and Sidon,7900:07:34,619 –> 00:07:39,559and Jesus draws the contrast here, the people of Tyre and Sidon never enjoyed privileges8000:07:39,640 –> 00:07:42,579like the people of Bethsida did. And so Jesus says,8100:07:42,579 –> 00:07:48,420Woe to you, Bethsida! Why? Because if the mighty works that were done8200:07:48,420 –> 00:07:53,519in you had been in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes,8300:07:53,519 –> 00:07:58,119but I tell you it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and for Sidon8400:07:58,119 –> 00:08:04,380than for you. Now you see the point here. Great opportunities8500:08:04,700 –> 00:08:11,660were given to the people of Bethsida. And Jesus is quite clear that the judgment upon8600:08:11,660 –> 00:08:17,940the people of Bethsida will be greater. Greater than it will be on the people of Tyre and8700:08:17,940 –> 00:08:22,579Sidon. Why? Because these people of Bethsida squandered the privileges that were given8800:08:22,579 –> 00:08:28,220to them. Second example, John chapter 6 speaks about8900:08:29,160 –> 00:08:35,599turned back. After this, many of his, that’s Jesus’ disciples, turned back and no longer9000:08:35,599 –> 00:08:42,080walked with him. That’s John 6, verse 66. Now the story here begins at the beginning9100:08:42,080 –> 00:08:46,760of John 6 where Jesus feeds 5,000 people with the loaves and the fish that are given to9200:08:46,760 –> 00:08:54,619him by a little boy. And the people were fed — miraculously fed on that day. They heard9300:08:54,859 –> 00:09:00,919of God from the lips of the Son of God and they literally tasted a miracle. Tasted a9400:09:00,919 –> 00:09:06,039miracle. So it’s not surprising that on the next day when they find that Jesus isn’t9500:09:06,039 –> 00:09:10,179in that place, they come to the other side of the lake, they follow him all around there9600:09:10,179 –> 00:09:15,659because they want something more. And Jesus teaches them the significance of the multiplying9700:09:15,659 –> 00:09:22,619of the loaves and the fish. I am the bread of life, he says. Whoever comes to me shall9800:09:22,619 –> 00:09:30,440not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. Whoever feeds upon me will live9900:09:30,440 –> 00:09:36,219because of me, he teaches them throughout John and chapter 6. But this teaching of Jesus10000:09:36,219 –> 00:09:44,020made them uncomfortable. And John chapter 6 and verse 60 says when many of his disciples,10100:09:44,020 –> 00:09:50,859many of them heard it, they said this is a hard saying, don’t like what Jesus is saying10200:09:50,979 –> 00:09:57,900and who can listen to it, and eventually in John 6sixty-six, many of his disciples turned10300:09:57,900 –> 00:10:05,039back and no longer walked with him. Now here again are people who have heard the word of10400:10:05,039 –> 00:10:12,760God from the Son of God, they have experienced a miracle, and they have followed Jesus around10500:10:12,760 –> 00:10:19,719the lake, they’ve seen enough of Jesus to want to follow him up to a certain point.10600:10:19,719 –> 00:10:26,119But when they are faced with the full implications of his sovereign claim upon their lives, what10700:10:26,119 –> 00:10:31,159do they do? They’re off. They turn back.10800:10:31,159 –> 00:10:34,719And the third example I’ll give you this evening of course is the one that is best10900:10:34,719 –> 00:10:40,479known and that is the example of Judas Iscariot. Everything that is said in Hebrews in chapter11000:10:40,479 –> 00:10:48,0396 was true of Judas Iscariot. For three years he was in the company of Jesus, he was a follower11100:10:48,039 –> 00:10:54,159of Jesus during that time the light of truth came to him he knew it. During that time he11200:10:54,159 –> 00:10:58,080tasted the goodness of the word of God. He’s sitting there when Jesus teaches the sermon11300:10:58,080 –> 00:11:04,479on the mount in that time he shared in the Holy Spirit. He was sent out with the other11400:11:04,479 –> 00:11:11,380disciples on a mission of proclamation and of healing and of casting out demons. He was11500:11:11,460 –> 00:11:18,059engaged in these works, and he tasted the powers of the age to come. He’s in the boat11600:11:18,059 –> 00:11:24,820when Jesus calms the storm, he’s by the tomb when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. But11700:11:24,820 –> 00:11:30,700despite all of this spiritual experience that was not saving experience, Judas Iscariot11800:11:30,700 –> 00:11:37,700walks away. Now I’m saying to you from this passage of scripture and from these very clear11900:11:38,239 –> 00:11:45,239examples that it is therefore possible to have spiritual experience that is not saving12000:11:45,679 –> 00:11:52,679experience, it is possible to enjoy spiritual privilege, opportunity, without actually becoming12100:11:53,080 –> 00:12:00,080one of Christ’s sheep. And that puts a person in the most dangerous spiritual position of12200:12:00,080 –> 00:12:07,080all.12300:12:08,119 –> 00:12:12,359Certainly a sobering place for us to pause the program for a moment, here on Open the12400:12:12,359 –> 00:12:17,000Bible, being in that dangerous position and we’ll get back to the message very shortly.12500:12:17,000 –> 00:12:21,659If you ever miss one of our messages, it’s very easy to catch up or go back and listen12600:12:21,659 –> 00:12:28,659again. Back to The Message now, here again is Colin.13600:13:18,559 –> 00:13:23,500Now here we come to the most difficult part of Hebrews and chapter 6. So please13700:13:23,500 –> 00:13:28,080try to follow with me as we walk through these verses . . .13800:13:28,080 –> 00:13:37,039For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened and13900:13:37,039 –> 00:13:41,539so forth, through the five different things we’ve seen, it’s impossible in the14000:13:41,539 –> 00:13:44,080case of these people who’ve experienced these things and then have14100:13:45,039 –> 00:13:53,840fallen away, it is impossible to restore them again to repentance since they are14200:13:53,840 –> 00:14:01,679crucifying . . . it’s hard even to read this . . . once again the14300:14:01,679 –> 00:14:13,539Son of God, to their own harm, and holding Him up to contempt . . . now let’s try and14400:14:13,539 –> 00:14:19,820take in this astonishing statement . . . Hebrews is talking about people who’ve14500:14:19,820 –> 00:14:25,659experienced remarkable, they have had remarkable experiences, tasted the14600:14:25,659 –> 00:14:30,659heavenly gift, shared in the Holy Spirit, and have fallen away, that is, they no14700:14:30,679 –> 00:14:38,979longer follow Christ, they’ve walked away from him. They have become defiant14800:14:38,979 –> 00:14:47,580towards Him. They want nothing of His Lordship over their lives. And Hebrews 614900:14:47,580 –> 00:14:57,760says it is impossible to restore such a person to repentance. Why? Notice what it15000:14:57,820 –> 00:15:02,919says. It’s very important. The reason that it is impossible to restore the defiant15100:15:02,919 –> 00:15:11,880person to repentance is that they are… present tense… crucifying once again the15200:15:11,880 –> 00:15:18,580Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. Notice the present15300:15:18,580 –> 00:15:27,359tense… they are doing… Hebrews says… in effect… what the crowd on Good Friday did15400:15:27,520 –> 00:15:37,080all over again. They said, we’ve got no place for him so crucify him. And what15500:15:37,080 –> 00:15:40,400Hebrews 6 is saying is that when a person has tasted something of the truth15600:15:40,400 –> 00:15:42,780and they’ve decided to go in the opposite way and they have become15700:15:42,780 –> 00:15:46,880defiant and resistant towards Jesus Christ, what is actually happening is15800:15:46,880 –> 00:15:51,200that in that decision and in taking that direction you’re doing exactly the same15900:15:51,200 –> 00:15:55,000thing as was being done on Good Friday. Away with Jesus.16000:15:55,039 –> 00:16:05,760There’s no place for him as sovereign over this life. Now here’s then what I16100:16:05,760 –> 00:16:14,640would want to say to the person who has become defiant. If you once professed16200:16:14,640 –> 00:16:19,239faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and now have fallen away and now are resisting16300:16:19,900 –> 00:16:27,400upon your life, you are my friend in the most dangerous position of all. The16400:16:27,400 –> 00:16:32,919longer you resist the claim of Jesus Christ upon your life the harder your16500:16:32,919 –> 00:16:39,340heart will become. Understand this, that what’s really happening is that with16600:16:39,340 –> 00:16:45,000every day that passes you, in your resistance to Jesus are crucifying once16700:16:45,299 –> 00:16:52,719again the Son of God to your own harm, and then I’d lean forward and I’m doing16800:16:52,719 –> 00:17:02,219this right now in regards to each of us here and I’d say stop doing that! Stop16900:17:02,219 –> 00:17:09,560doing that! I’ve seen friends an awful lot of people17000:17:09,560 –> 00:17:14,760over the years who’ve had some experience of spiritual things, some17100:17:14,760 –> 00:17:20,520taste of the truth, maybe have professed faith at one season of their lives but17200:17:20,520 –> 00:17:29,280it didn’t, it wasn’t a faith at last. And they have drifted, or they have become17300:17:29,280 –> 00:17:39,040defiant, and let me just describe the nightmare scenario that weighs on my17400:17:39,079 –> 00:17:47,199mind. That one day there really will be a vast company of people who will be17500:17:47,199 –> 00:17:57,079gathered with and around the Lord Jesus Christ, and many of them will have been17600:17:57,079 –> 00:18:05,420raised in homes where they never heard the gospel, raised in homes where they17700:18:05,479 –> 00:18:13,619never attended church. Vast numbers of them will be people who were born in17800:18:13,619 –> 00:18:22,900poverty, struggled daily just to survive. Some of them would for some time in17900:18:22,900 –> 00:18:27,920their lives have been immersed in lives of violence and of crime, but they have18000:18:27,920 –> 00:18:33,719come to repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and there they stand in18100:18:33,760 –> 00:18:39,479this vast company of people, their faces a light with joy as at last they see18200:18:39,479 –> 00:18:46,540face to face the one they’ve come to love and to trust heart to heart. And in18300:18:46,540 –> 00:18:55,900this nightmare scenario that weighs on my mind, outside there is another crowd18400:18:56,079 –> 00:19:08,280and they will include many who were raised by godly parents, attended worship18500:19:08,280 –> 00:19:16,239in a faithful Church and perhaps even were educated at a marvelous Christian18600:19:16,239 –> 00:19:23,920University. And they enjoyed privileges that others never knew or even dreamed18700:19:23,920 –> 00:19:34,400of and for some years they were close to the kingdom of God. But they drifted. And18800:19:34,400 –> 00:19:43,959then they became defiant. And now they are outside. And I’ve come with this18900:19:44,040 –> 00:19:50,619burden on my heart. Why should any person in this auditorium tonight be in that19000:19:50,619 –> 00:19:58,900crowd? Why should any of you be in that crowd? If the light of truth has shined19100:19:58,900 –> 00:20:03,119on you. And you’ve tasted at least something of the heavenly gift shared in19200:20:03,119 –> 00:20:07,119the Holy Spirit, the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come.19300:20:07,119 –> 00:20:13,239Great, great, great privileges have been given to you. The sin of turning away19400:20:13,300 –> 00:20:17,439from the light that you have received is especially offensive towards God. It is19500:20:17,439 –> 00:20:27,640crucifying afresh, the Son of God, to your own harm and holding him up to contempt,19600:20:27,640 –> 00:20:36,839if you are resisting the claim of Jesus Christ upon your life tonight. Dear19700:20:36,939 –> 00:20:43,599friend, I want to say to you with great love from the heart… stop crucifying19800:20:43,599 –> 00:20:49,800again the Son of God and cast yourself upon his mercy. If you have become19900:20:49,800 –> 00:20:53,959defiant you will know from your own experience, and you may be feeling this20000:20:53,959 –> 00:21:00,800right now, that if God begins to tug your heart, to draw you to submit your life20100:21:00,839 –> 00:21:08,680unconditionally to Jesus Christ, your heart will mount a vigorous defiance, a20200:21:08,680 –> 00:21:17,520resistance to the very thought that you would come back. And that’s why tonight20300:21:17,520 –> 00:21:24,219you need to ask Jesus Christ to do for you what you cannot do for yourself, ask20400:21:24,859 –> 00:21:31,579him to change your hard defiant resistant rebellious heart and deliver you from20500:21:31,579 –> 00:21:42,060the power of your own rebellion and make you therefore his own. Friends, many of20600:21:42,060 –> 00:21:50,280you here tonight will have a mother, a father, a grandmother, a grandfather, a20700:21:50,939 –> 00:22:00,920friend, a colleague, a pastor who has been praying for you and maybe praying for20800:22:00,920 –> 00:22:10,500you for years. And there is an urgency in the hearts of those who love you because20900:22:10,500 –> 00:22:18,219they see the spiritual danger you’re in. And here in God’s mercy you’re here in21000:22:18,219 –> 00:22:26,760this Chapel, and I am pleading with you if you have been resisting, defiant21100:22:26,760 –> 00:22:32,199towards the claim of the Lord Jesus Christ upon your life, you know He’s been21200:22:32,199 –> 00:22:35,760pressing in on you, you feel him pressing in on your now and you’re even now21300:22:35,760 –> 00:22:43,020tempted to try and push Him away. Stop defing the claim of Jesus Christ upon21400:22:43,180 –> 00:22:50,339your life and embrace Him humbly in repentance and in faith.21500:22:50,339 –> 00:22:56,339If you sense God calling you to himself today, take a moment to look up Hebrews21600:22:56,339 –> 00:23:03,4593.15 it says, if you hear His voice do not harden your heart, come to21700:23:03,459 –> 00:23:07,660Jesus, ask Him to save you from any rebellion and defiance that you’re21800:23:07,660 –> 00:23:12,500harboring, and know that He will indeed do that.
