Jesus Came to Bring Light

“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” JOHN 12:46

This is our sixth statement from Jesus about why He came into the world.

The entire human story can be described in four stages, and in each of them, the light of Jesus shines in a different way.

The Old Testament era, from creation to the birth of Jesus, could be described as moonlight. The moon does not have its own light, but during the night, the moon reflects the light of the sun.

Jesus cannot be seen directly in the Old Testament, but He is there all the way through, like the light of the sun reflected by the moon. That is why Jesus said, “The Scriptures… bear witness about me” (John 5:39).

B. B. Warfield said, “The Old Testament can be compared to a room fully furnished but dimly lit; the introduction of light brings into it nothing that was not there before; but it brings out into clear view much of what was in it but was only dimly perceived before.”

The law shows us why we need Jesus, the sacrifices show what we need Him to do, and the promises show what He would accomplish when He came.

Can you think of a place in the Old Testament where you can see the moonlight of Jesus?
